Golden Time — Restaurant in Chiang Saen district

4.5 stars; this from a local; this is right on the mekhong river; this is a middle-high-end restaurant; not small; has tourist prices and better-then-usual tourist-thai food; big menu ( but only in thai, some pictures ); smart, well-trained staff; upstairs balcony and down-by-river seating; upstairs is better quality seating , IMO;; food was quite good making this a tourist-value spot; parking is an issue; this place can get crowded, especially as night falls and there is only street/highway parking; prepare to walk a bit; we went well before nightfall and stayed well after nightfall; the place has a very different feel is the full light versus dark night; the casino lights (Laos) are impressive; i would recommend trying to enjoy Both the late afternoon and evening experiences; as a tourist i would recommend this place; as a local, once would do it, other than taking first-timers as guests; we locals know places similar to this that have thai prices; nonetheless a good place

I’m honestly confused by the high reviews. My red curry came with silken tofu (never seen that in a curry before!) and tasted terrible. My colleague’s curry never arrived at all. We ordered extra rice, but the staff just seemed confused and nothing happened. Service was chaotic: ten staff members, all on their phones or fixing their hair, barely paying attention to guests. Every question was met with “no, no.” A waitress even tried to open four bottles of water for us (we only wanted one), and we had to stop her or we’d be charged for all of them.
