Terrific opportunity to sample Burmese cuisine in this quiet little unassuming restaurant set back from the central hub of Mae Hong Son. Outdoor covered seating is around bamboo benches & tables or a couple of low tables with floor mats & cushions. The food was simply wonderful, with a page full of local Shan dishes. The Burmese Green Tea Salad was so delicious, filled with varied textures & subtle flavours, including pickled tea leaves from Myanmar. We also had the mini Poppadoms with fresh salsa, and the comforting Potato & Eggplant Curry (tho the veggies were green?), plus the Thai Minced Pork with Holy Basil. All dishes were really tasty & good sized portions, we polished off the lot! The fresh lime soda was also a refreshing drink choice. If we had more time in Mae Hong Son, we would have happily eaten here again! Definitely worth a visit.

This place was so delicious that it could easily be among the best food we’ve had in Thailand. Especially since we ordered all vegetarian options. The salsa was delicious. Don’t expect American corn chips to dip it in. This is all about the salsa itself. The vehicle for salsa are more like fried rice chips, and that doesn’t matter. It’s the salsa itself that wins life. The Burmese Potatoes. Wow. The crunchy exterior mixed with the hot potato interior of something hash brown like. With a sweet dipping sauce that left us wanting for more. The third dish we had was Burmese Green Tea Salad which was unusually scrumptious! If you’re looking for a place to eat and this review popped up, hit “direction to this place” on Google Maps and just get here. The food and atmosphere will not disappoint! Plus they have large cold beer!

Found “Salween River Restaurant” in a search for “Best Vegetarian restaurants in Mae Hong Son.” It came up at or near the top and I wasn’t disappointed. Using local produce, they have a diversity of food but I went straight for the Shan/Burmese food as the owner/cook is of Shan Burmese ethnicity. The Burmese green tea salad was absolutely delicious and almost a meal unto itself. The “Burmese potato cakes” and “potato and eggplant curry” were similarly delicious. All of these dishes are vegan. To drink I had the “Refreshing banana smoothie” with lime, banana, pandan leaves and coconut. Original, delicious and refreshing. Thank you for the great food and service! I will be back. Bonus: they have both on the floor and table seating options and just a few minutes out of town it is a very serene environment.

While I was in Mae Hong Son last month for work, I had the opportunity to go with colleagues to Salween River Restaurant a few times for brunch. It was so good that I also ordered delivery to my guesthouse a few times also.

For a small tourist destination, options for delicious non-Thai food is limited. Listings for the restaurant say it serves Asian, Burmese, and Thai dishes. While that is true, it also serves some European dishes.

Surprisingly, all the different dishes that my colleagues and I had over several visits or meals were good. The portions are generous and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed some of Swiss and German options available.

The prices are reasonable, given how much food and the quality you get.

The only down side is that restaurant is located a bit far from the center of town and where most tourists or visitors are lodged, so you will need your own transport or get a tuk tuk. Or ask for their...

My friend and I had dinner here as it's only a few minutes away from where we were staying. We got there by motorbikes on a semi-rough terrain. Lots of space to park bikes btw. Loved the whole ambiance of the place! It's situated in an open field and at night you can clearly see the stars shining in the sky. There's a bonfire with seats which gave a cozy camp feel. Fairy lights lined the perimeter which gave a nice charm. There was tons of seating options, and we chose the area where you can sit on the padded mats. We were greeted by hospitable servers, and a menu was provided in English. It was tough to communicate with the language barrier which affected the dishes my friend ordered (he asked for no spice, but everything was spicy). Good portions, nice presentations, but overall food was ok. It would be helpful if servers can clarify first if they're unsure. Other than that, I'm very happy with the...

We had an amazing evening at this restaurant! My partner and I decided to order nearly everything from the Burmese menu, and we were absolutely delighted. The food was incredible, with each dish bursting with unique flavours.

The standout for us was the green tea salad—something I’d never tried before, and it was simply fantastic. The flavours were so distinct and memorable. We also loved their take on poppadoms, especially paired with the delicious salsa.

If you’re in a group, we’d highly recommend ordering a variety of dishes from the Burmese menu to truly experience everything it has to offer. It’s worth noting that the restaurant also serves other cuisines and breakfast options, so there’s something for everyone.

We had a great time and would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to try something a bit different...
