At Chiang Mai — Restaurant in Surat Thani Province

I am genuinely puzzled by the glowing reviews this restaurant has attracted and am astonished at just how poor a restaurant can be and still be lauded by all and sundry. It does rather undermine one's confidence in the reviewing process as a whole. When we (a party of 4) arrived at 8:00 the front of house was quite busy but we were ushered through to the garden which wasn't very crowded. All of the tables available had dirty crockery and cutlery on them from previous diners which had not been cleared away and, indeed, never were...we just stacked them on a spare chair. Our order was taken at around 8:10. the food began arriving at 8:40, which was a bit of a wait, but just about OK. However, only 2 of the 4 dishes ordered arrived (including different rice to what was ordered). we then waited for the remainder. After another 15 minutes had elapsed I went to the front to find out where the rest was. I was told very abruptly by the woman cooking that she was 'very busy' and that it would be coming when it was ready. A third dish did arrive at 9:10 (our two companions had by now left), while the final dish (actually the Northerm Thai dish speciality we came here for) never appeared at all. We gave up on that, paid for what we'd received, without any explanation or apology as to what was going on. Yes, the cook did look busy behind what appeared to be numerous take-out hampers, so maybe in-house customers are further down the food chain. The place was dingy, uncomfortable and hardly conducive to a nice chilled night out. the food was no better than anywhere else we have eaten, certainly nothing close to the ecstatic reviews online. Nice Location, but quite Dark because not enough Lights. We tried to order, which ended up in a big chaos, because all the Burmese Staff don't speak English or Thai. Northern Style Sausage was served first and was completely cold by the time It took them to bring my Main Dish and they forgot about my Drink, so I had to wait another 20min for my Mango Shake, which tasted like Water. When they brought the Soup after another 20min and many reminders, they forgot the Meat and Noodles in the Soup, so they basically Served only Water in a Bowl, so it took another 10min to correct the mistake and we finally could start to eat, then realizing that it all tasted very bad. We failed to get the Attention of any Waiter for around 10 Times, to ask to bring us some Soy & Fish Sauce etc., but nobody seemed to care. I have popped into this restaurant unknowingly with no recommendation and a random stop off but let me tell you right now Someone was looking after me. I have never been treated so well by every member of the staff. The way they welcomed me and looked after me and fed me some of the best food I’ve ever had really gave me no option but to keep coming back and every time I was blown away by service and the food. The food Truly amazing and the menu is absolutely intriguing. There’s nothing On the menu that has been anything but spectacular. Every single time it leaves meme thinking about it after I leave the venue . This is one of the most beautiful restaurants On the whole Island. It is a must see stop and taste kind of place you might not leave and I would not blame you. I hope next time when I return, I’ll be able to make a booking because this place is on the rise...
