Sultana Indian Restaurant & Takeaway — Restaurant in Basildon

Taking facebook reviews at their word we turned up here for dinner, surprised to find we were the only ones eating at Sultana. It didn't take long to figure out why.

Not a good experience over all, although they are getting some things right. The service was good, the dining room (though a little tired decor-wise) was very clean and well presented and the breads were very nice. However, that was where our luck ran out.

The most egregious fault was being served a paneer tandoori that was burned on one side and flipped over on the plate (very disappponting). Most of the onions on the hotplate were black and like charcoal. OK... even professional chefs burn things sometimes... But don't then send them out to the customer! We sent the food back and it was recooked - much better but BLAND - a word that sums up most of our dinner.

The lamb stir fry was lacking in flavour. The cubes of meat in the tandoori mixed grill were tough, dry and tasted of grill but not at all of lamb or chicken. The best element of the tandoori platter was the chicken leg - it was the most flavoursome thing we ate. If you are eating here, just get tandoori chicken and be happy.

Maybe we are spoiled for Indian/Bangladeshi cuisine as we come from Manchester and eat out in Rusholme twice a week... Sultana is now our regular restaurant and we do not even live local but Ash and the team make the journey worthwhile. Felt for Ash last night, it was so busy with table and takeaway dining he seemed to be doing every job going but had time to say hello and make sure everything was OK. We did book (always do now). Party of six came in and staff asked if we would move tables so they could cater for them - not a problem. Food was slightly delayed but as always was worth the wait - I am sure Ash actually cooked it, he was that busy!!!! As always we had a great night at the Sultana and can not wait for the next visit. Wickford highstreet is crying out for a decent Indian restaurant for dine in and Sultana is the only choice! Good selection of curries available, I always love Chef specialities/recommendations and enjoyed the Chicken Hyderabad. The staff were keen to talk about the food and offer suggestions.

The waiting staff are warm and welcoming, always checking in on us and the food came swiftly. Unfortunately the men's toilet was in a state, broken plumbing and water on the floor.
