Myself and my husband ate in your function room last night (Friday 14th December 2018) and were both very disappointed with the meal.
There were a party of 22 people at our table and both the table service, quality, quantity and temperature of the food were very poor.
When the starters arrived my husbands soup was barely warm, my starter and the starters of two people sitting opposite me never arrived!
Not one member of waiting staff came back to check that everything was ok and to check that eveyone had a been given their starters!
To make matters worse a gentleman then came to take my husbands empty soup dish away, I explained that three of us had not been given our starters and that we were waiting for two brie and one salmon, I then asked why he was clearing the table before we had had our starters and voiced my concerns that once the table was cleared the main courses would arrived before our starters, he assured me that they wouldn't and thankfully he was correct.
My brie eventually arrived which was ok but usually in restaurants you receive two pieces of brie I received only one! I had also eaten my starter before the the two people opposite me were served theirs!
When the main courses were served my husband was given his beef he then had to wait a good five minutes before he was given a dish of vegetables and potatoes, another barely warm plate of beef and peppercorn sauce had to be eaten. I guess I was lucky when my turkey arrived it was on a hot plate and my vegetables and potatoes followed almost straight away. The main course was a little better than the starter and quite a nice portion.
Sweet for myself was another disappointment I had ordered xmas pudding with 'ice cream' why was it not served with brandy sauce? Which is the tradition or at least custard! In my dish were NUTS which I hate! luckily I am not allergic to them or the dish would have been sent back! After pushing the nuts to one side I ate the pudding which was ok but not the same without the brandy sauce. My husbands cheese and biscuits were the better choice.
Where was the coffee to finish off the meal? I have never been to a xmas dinner before where tea or coffee have not been offered!
I worked as a silver service waitress for 15 years in a top class restaurant in Halifax and the golden rule of service was to make sure that the diners were happy, to make sure that everyone had been given the correct meals and to check that they didn't need anything else. I was also trained to never clear plates/dishes from a table until everybody had finished eating.
The cost of the meal should have been £25 per head but was reduced to £20 per head due to the size of our party, I do not feel that we were given value for money and I felt embarrased for my husbands company who were very kindly paying the bill.
This was our first visit to your restaurant and If this was the best you can offer we will not be visiting again...
Read moreWe recently stayed at 1885 for the second time and in general had a nice stay. The rooms are very nice, spacious with good facilities and the welcome we received on arrival was very friendly.||My one criticism with it was the breakfast. We had breakfast on the first morning and we were offered a selection of hot food, with tea, toast and orange juice, with table service. Most of the breakfast was ok with good ingredients.||On the second day, which was a Monday. We came down 15 mins before we had said we would have breakfast and the breakfast restaurant was closed and there was no-one around really. We found someone working in the pub who didn't know much about us or breakfast and said she would find out and told us to go back to our room and she would come and tell us. Personally, I would have made us a cup of tea and let us sit in the pub while she found out rather than sending us to our room. She did kindly come up and tell us the chef was on the way about 10 mins later.||We came down 15 mins later, which was the time we had stated we wanted breakfast, so partly our issue for coming down too early, but it just kind of felt like we were a bit of a nuisance to them as we seemed to be the only people having breakfast. Unlike the day before, there was cereal on offer that day which we helped ourselves too, rather than just a hot breakfast and we just ordered some toast to have with our cereal.||The chef was in the kitchen and we pretty much had to shout our order to him in the open kitchen. He brought the toast over to us and then he carried on doing his food prep for the lunch service presumably, which involved a lot of banging and clattering pans in the open kitchen and then using the food processor to prep some vegetables, which was very loud and one and off for about 15 mins. Not the quiet relaxed breakfast we were hoping for. It is a shame as a nice...
