Disappointing Experience at Pakwaan: Rude Manager and Unpleasant Atmosphere.. I recently dined at Pakwaan, an Indian restaurant located in Chelmsford, and I must say that my experience was far from pleasant. From the moment I walked in, it was evident that the manager, a bulky man wearing specs, was not interested in providing satisfactory service or ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for customers. The most significant issue I encountered was the manager's rude and forceful behavior. Instead of being greeted with a warm smile or a polite gesture, I was met with an unpleasant attitude that instantly set the tone for my dining experience. The manager seemed more interested in exerting his authority than catering to the needs of the customers. Furthermore, what struck me as particularly off-putting was the manager's engagement with the other staff members in their regional language. As a customer, it is frustrating and alienating to be surrounded by conversations you cannot understand. It created an uncomfortable environment and left me feeling like an outsider in my own dining experience. It is important for a restaurant to prioritize inclusivity and ensure that all customers feel valued, regardless of their background or language spoken. Additionally, I must acknowledge that despite the disappointing aspects of my visit, I cannot deny the impressive taste and quality of the food at Pakwaan. The flavors were rich, and each dish was expertly spiced, showcasing the culinary expertise of the kitchen staff. Furthermore, the presentation of the dishes was visually appealing, demonstrating attention to detail and artistic flair. Given my experience at Pakwaan, I cannot recommend this establishment to others. The lack of customer service, the manager's rudeness, and the exclusionary conversations among staff members make for an unwelcoming and uncomfortable dining experience. It is unfortunate that a restaurant with such potential fails to prioritize customer satisfaction and fails to create a pleasant atmosphere for its patrons. I hope this review serves as constructive feedback for Pakwaan and encourages them to address the issues mentioned, thereby improving the overall dining experience for...
Read moreLast night was the first visit to this amazing restaurant. On arrival we were introduced to the owner and realised he had originally started the restaurant in Ilford where we used to live.
As a marketing manager who managers social media and online branding for restaurants, I have to say this restaurant has thought about the demographic it is catering to and knows exactly who the client is. It is not a curry house and it is not a run of the mill Bengali restaurant posing as an Indian restaurant. The cuisine served is true and authentic Punjabi food. The balance of flavour in each dish is perfect. It has an essence of refined dining. The restaurant itself is modern and contemporary and has character. The paintings on the wall of the Maharaja's of India hint at Royal cuisine and you certainly are served just that.
Was surprised it was quiet for a Saturday night as it truly is a gem that you need to visit. The in-house live singer is great and versatile with his song choice. Looking at previous reviews, it is not too loud, it is just right as background music. Our waiter John was friendly and welcoming, special shout out to Brenda who looked after our table and Raj, the owner, credit to you on establishing Pakwaan outside London in a pandemic. Additionally the negative reviews, from my experience as a marketing consultant usually are down to people finding an issue with cost and to justify the complaint they complain about everything.
Only negative point I would say is your online presence needs to be more prominent in Google. The website points to takeaway side where you need to be driving customers in to enjoy the full Pakwaan dining experience.
We will be back

Read moreWe passed Pakwaan a few times on walks through Writtle before lockdown and meant to try the food here but didn't get around to it. I'm so glad we went tonight. Firstly it's nice to be able to park easily right by the restaurant. We were greeted by a lovely man who was really welcoming and friendly (he is a reflection of the atmosphere here thanks to the kind and welcoming staff).
The menu is fantastic with very clear references to Vegan and Gluten Free. I feel this is a safe restaurant for people with allergies and for Vegans like us it's great to see the many options we had (thank you Pakwaan for considering us).
Our starters were delicious and a perfect portion size. For our main meal, we shared two different curries and a side dish and found the food was beautifully flavoured, warming and tasty rather than just hot as you might find elsewhere.
When it comes to drinks, there's a good selection on offer. If you are driving, it's lovely that they offer alcohol free spirits for mocktails as it doesn't feel like you're missing out.
The staff are absolutely lovely, very helpful and friendly. The restaurant itself has a fantastic atmosphere and the decor is tasteful, comfortable yet airy and bright thanks to the lovely tall windows that look out to Writtle. It should go without saying but having experienced other places where it wasn't the case, it is worth mentioning that this restaurant is impeccably clean.
I would definitely recommend...
