Like most pubs, its reputation relies a lot on the food. At the time of our visits, the chef was amazing, we couldn't find fault (and I really do try) so we were happy to pay the ÂŁ12 to ÂŁ14 average per meal. Over two visits (a small group, then a large party) there were a few steaks, all cooked to different preferences, and ALL were spot on. Crab cakes (starter or main) were (AIQ) "...to die for!" so, hats off to the chef. Plenty of 'Pub Classics' for the less adventurous, those in a hurry or those with fussy kids, so a good price range to choose from. I've spoken freely with a staff member, and the kitchen hygiene standards are no cause for concern (and, trust me, the staff member would've ranted if there'd been anything to rant about).
The location is great. Set on a hill, only just out of the Market Town of Midhurst (also worth a visit, and frequented by celebs, don'tcha-know!) on the A286 heading south toward Chichester, the setting is peaceful with nice views. There is a large garden, safe for children (set right back from the road, with a carpark before it) and even a large BBQ area for the summer and for functions. Pear control is discreet and effective, no bug problem when eating outside, and the hosts like to organise activities when there are town festivities (get yourself to Mad-hurst, a great event!)
Just one little niggle- I'd suggest paying tips directly and discreetly, as there have been SEVERAL claims regarding the use of tips for paying suppliers, without those tips being returned to the 'pot' and, as those claims have come from several staff members (past and present) it's worth erring on the side of caution to ensure your tip only goes where you want it to go. It's business, they're only allegations and everyone works differently, so no judgement.
As for judgement on every other aspect, it's better than good.
Lovely hosts, lovely setting, great food and acceptable prices. Not a massive selection of draught, about 3 lagers, 1 ale and a cider, but there are bottles and a fair selection of wines. This isn't your local club, this is a little more upmarket but without the snobbery. Biker, family party, business meeting or hiding a secret love affair, you'll be...
Read moreThe food was great the waitress also very pleasant (when present)! However we went for a meal on Motherâs Day a table of 10 5 adults and 5 children aged from 8 months to 10 years old. When booking we made it clear that we would have our children and asked for a table maybe our the way (so we wouldnât disturb others) for anyone that has eaten here we were at the table secluded to the left as you walk in. About 45 minutes after we arrived the kids had eaten and we were all eating so the kids were getting bored so decided to play with each other, a women who I presume was the manger of sort approached us with what I can only describe as a face like a slapped * telling (not asking) that are kids need to be quiet or take them outside. Now I agree the 2 year old may have been having a tantrum (always uncomfortable enough in public) but to be spoken to in the manor she did made me feel really unwelcome. So after dwelling on it for a minute I approached her and explained I didnât appreciate the way she delivered the complaint and that her customer service was poor on this front, her reply with the same face as mentioned above âsorry if you feel that wayâ , I reminded her that this I presume is a child friendly environment as you have children menus etc to which she told me to stop raising my voice! Unless the one Amstel I had went to my head, I was polite and simply making her aware she had made us fell uncomfortable. After returning to my table without any reassurance that it was a request to keep our children quite and not a demand no waitress/waiter attended our table for a good 30 minutes to take an order so we were left to wait whilst trying to keep our children quite feeling very uncomfortable! Iâd really have loved to give a better review but this singular person completely ruined...

The food at The Royal Oak is simply outstanding. The Sunday roast was cooked to perfection, with tender meat, crispy roast potatoes, and a selection of fresh, flavorful vegetables.
