We went to Charwood for Mother's day lunch, and here's our experience:
We ordered a burger, a pizza and a roast. All came out and were presented lovely, the roast and pizza were delicious. However the burger was dry and bland. Overall, okay food but expensive.
We were a bit disappointed with the atmosphere, we were seated in the back, which had obviously been converted 1additional dining space for Mother's day however we feel it was very much trying to get as many tables as possible. Very limited spacing imbetween tables.
The biggest let down of the meal was the complete lack of service, again we understand it's mother's day and it's busy. However, our table was not checked on once throughout the entire meal and despite trying to get a waiters attention, my mother had to eventually go up to the bar to ask for gravy with her roast. Apologies were given and that was the end of that. However when trying to pay the bill, we get landed with a 10-12.5% service charge as 'It's Mother's Day'. We found this quite sly. We were 3 adults, not a big party and we didn't receive any service, we were not told about the service charge prior to the meal and there was no indication on the menu or from our only interaction with staff. We asked for the the service charge to be removed which we feel surprised staff but who were understand once we explained our reasoning.
Overall, despite living in Buckstone and being a walks away from our local, the Charwood, we wouldn't come back again anytime soon, especially for an occasion. I'd honestly recommend people to go the Klondyke or somewhere in...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCharwood is a restaurant & bar in the south of Edinburgh, with a large outdoor terrace area, in addition to the main indoor bar and restaurant space. It's nicely decorated in a contemporary style. The outdoor area is quite tranquil with attractive water features and well maintained plants & flowers right around the building. The staff are generally friendly and the service is quick. The menu is very large, and there's something to suit all tastes. The quality of the food is reasonable but not exceptional. It's not really possible to make additions or changes to the dishes when ordering because everything is pre-made, we were told. There was nothing the matter with our food but it wasn't particularly fresh. It's standard pub style food. Nothing wrong with it, but probably a little over-priced for what you get. They do have a drinks menu with a good range of wines, beers and cocktails but they aren't able to make anything off-menu, like an aperol spritz for example. Overall, I wasn't disappointed by my experience but I wasn't particularly impressed either. I will probably return in the future, maybe just for a light lunch or some drinks, but that's mostly because the location is very convenient for me rather than because of anything particularly appealing about the restaurant itself. Perhaps the second visit will be more impressive and change my mind,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFancied a tasty bite on a Sunday afternoon so decided to try out Charwood, having passed it so many times. Headed up with the Mrs and the first nice surprise was the ample car park. Went inside and first impressions were great - lots of nice twinkling fairy lights, subdued lighting and a nice clean open environment. Staff were friendly and the menu was decently varied without having too much on it. Bare in mind that this is a grill so much of the menu is steak, burgers etc. A great thing that I wished other restaurants did more was that some dishes had a smaller portion option - I got the 'small' fish and chips which was still decently portioned and delicious. It also came with a decent lemon wedge, which is a bit of a rarity these days! My wife got the fillet steak skewers with peppercorn sauce which she said was amazing. I also got the bruschetta starter which was lovely too. Overall I'd highly recommend Charwood. The only downside was that service was a bit slow and the waiting staff seemed a bit rushed/stressed, although...
