The wife and I often take her mum and dad out for dinner and being from Prestonpans we usually stick to local eateries. But this time we thought we would surprise them and take them somewhere different. I’ve always noticed the Steading in the passing or visiting the Ski slope at hillhend, so I looked it up on google and checked out the menu and the reviews, The reviews mentioned that it was the best fish & chips in Edinburgh and the Lothian’s, it also mentioned it was big portions, So as the 4 of us always order the fish & chips wherever we go, we thought let’s try this place out. We booked our table online for the next day. Upon our arrival we were not disappointed. The place was spotlessly clean and even although it was busy we were amazed our food was out within 5 minutes, it was first class service. The reviews were spot on, the fish was truly exceptional and the big portions lived up to the reputation because anywhere else you go you normally get fish and a half a dozen chips… NOT HERE…. The plate is full to it’s capacity, I opted for peas while the other 3 got salad dressing instead of peas, My god the salad dressing really complimented the dish in its own right. Well done the Steading, You are obviously a great team all singing of the same hymn sheet. Fantastic service, very welcoming staff and a warm cosy venue.Lovely place. We will definitely be making the Steading our number one choice when we come out for dinner. Everything about this experience makes it worth while for us to now forget the local eateries and make the drive up to the Steading. Thanks for making our visit so nice. Mum & Dad loved it as did we.

Read moreThe Steading Restaurant was a good place to meet up with long lost relatives. Plenty of parking available at the Steading. The service was very good. The staff where friendly and attentive. We had a table pre booked up in the Conservatory which is lovely and bright sourounded with lots of plants outside. The food I had was Scampi and Chips, the smaller portion.( This is an excellent idea to see on the menu as like some people I can't eat large portions), also due to my special diet requirements I couldn't have any of the Vegetables or Salad that was offered. I enjoyed what I had, I could not finish all the chips. Others at my table had the Lamb which looked really nice a very big helping of sliced Lamb in gravy with plenty of Vegetables, this was one of the specials from the specials board. My relatives were from Australia so they felt they had to try the Lamb they didn't leave a comment other than saying wow that's a big portion. We finished with tea and coffee. Overall the food was fine, the staff were great, and the restaurant was a nice place to meet up and have a good catch up. Just for people wanting to book the conservatory, I walk with one stick, the stairs up to the conservatory are very steep but have stair rails each side. There may be another entrance for wheel chair users but I wasn't aware of it. Inside there are quite a variety of tables, large and small and a ramp at the bottom end. We all enjoyed our visit to...
Read moreA small group for lunch, we had to ask for menus, go to the bar to order, no service to speak of. The staff seemed friendly, but there is clearly no organisation or leadership there. The food was nothing short of appalling. Imagine the worst lasagne you have ever eaten, and then multiply that by 100. Half the lasagne was stuck to the plate, the rest was a solid lump of pasta and dried out sauce, with a smear of horrible looking meat at the bottom. The sticky toffee pudding was dry and tasteless. The food was clearly bought in pre-made from catering firms, and was reheated and/or microwaved: in short the offerings made school meals look like they were cooked by Gordon Ramsay himself. We didn't complain, it was a sensitive occasion, and no-one wanted a fuss. It also wasn't that expensive, however, you couldn't pay me to eat that food again. I don't normally write reviews, but I want to appeal to whoever owns this place to show some respect to the people who pay their hard earned money for food, to at least make it edible. You need good restaurant management, good cooks/chefs, and perhaps don't leave the serving staff to get so demoralised they don't do their jobs effectively. It's not that hard, I've done it! On the upside, the bar seemed fairly busy with tourists and people with dogs, so by all means have a drink there, just do yourself a favour, and don't eat the food until they learn...
