This pub has taken on new management. My post is accurate as of the time of writing (February 2023) as are the pics. So let's go!
The Dog and Pheasant is a great neighborhood pub! The staff are absolutely amazing! They are very welcoming. They have been more than happy to help.
The food! So we ordered two Mix It Up (on a Sunday) with the 15oz (3x5oz) Gammon with sweet potato fries and onion rings. (See the picture). Liam (the cook for the visit) did his thing! The gammon was cooked to perfection! It was juicy and succulent and worked well with both the Korean BBQ sauce and the Texan Sauce.
There could've been more onion rings, but at the price paid, I'm not going to complain. But the sweet potato fries! Generally, most places, they're not thoroughly cooked! Liam, made these to perfection! Crispy on the outside, nice, fluffy, and soft on the inside. That is hard to do with sweet potatoes.
Peter is an amazing addition to the pub! He's very knowledgeable! He was extremely caring for our needs. He knows his way around a pub of this nature! Younger staff can definitely learn from this gentleman!
The ONLY reason I'm not giving them 5 Stars is due to an incident earlier in the week. There was a situation where a person came in and made some very upsetting and offensive comments. I had to address the issue. One of the managers actually stated something to individual. However the person was still served. I'm not a snowflake and have tough skin. However, he should have been shown the door!
Overall, great place! Great food! Plenty of parking! Wonderful garden with playground! This is a FAMILY pub! They're trying to get entertainment back. Right now there is karaoke...
Read moreThe Dog & Pheasant Pub in Colchester is an absolute delight and a true example of a classic British pub done right. From the moment you walk in, youâre welcomed by a warm and cozy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The dĂ©cor strikes the perfect balance between traditional charm and modern comfort, with its wooden beams, comfortable seating, and a fireplace that adds to the inviting ambiance.
The food here is fantastic, offering a great selection of hearty pub classics as well as some more contemporary dishes. Everything is freshly prepared and bursting with flavor. The Sunday roast is particularly noteworthyâperfectly cooked meats, fluffy Yorkshire puddings, and all the trimmings. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable, making it excellent value for money.
The drink selection is also impressive, with a wide variety of ales, beers, wines, and spirits to choose from. Whether youâre in the mood for a pint of something local or a nice glass of wine, thereâs something for everyone.
What really sets the Dog & Pheasant apart is the service. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always making sure that youâre well taken care of. Theyâre knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make recommendations, which adds to the overall positive experience.
Whether youâre stopping by for a quick drink, enjoying a meal with friends, or looking for a relaxed evening out, the Dog & Pheasant is the perfect spot. Itâs a wonderful local pub with great food, a fantastic atmosphere, and excellent service. Highly recommended for anyone...
Read moreMy first visit to the Dog & Pheasant with a group of friends was quite honestly awful! Female staff were quite rude towards me and others, seemed she REALLY didn't want to be there nor put any effort into her work.
Would often see staff members arguing amongst themselves, which could be heard on the other side of the building away from the bar. When a friend had asked politely for a spoon, a member of staff had said he would get one. 10-15min later she's still waiting for this spoon so her boyfriend goes up to the bar and politely asks for a spoon as one was requested some time ago. The girl serving on the bar simply sighed and rolled her eyes, giving him the spoon.
The pub was quiet, only two tables had ordered food and two or so people drinking at the bar.
When we eventually got our food, one of my friends had ordered before us originally and had only ordered the ultimate caramel sundae and was still waiting long after we had eaten. He eventually got it after complaining and was told his order had been forgotten about.
After I had ordered the same giant sundae thing as everyone else, I was brought a tiny sundae which was the wrong order, I went up to the bar to say I had been given another tables dessert.
Which the female staff member started bickering between her and a male member of staff claiming she had served me when in fact it was the guy who had taken my last order.
The guy apologized for how we had been treated. But safe to say we won't...
