Unbelievable! My partner and i arrived at this pub around 1830 Sat. July 19/2014. What appeared to be a welcoming place advertising food served all day, turned out to be a waste of time. As we were perusing the menu, literally two mins upon arriving, this unbelievably rude (owner) barked at us both "there is no room we are fully booked" when clearly they were not which i questioned and was then only to be told the kitchen is now closed? Stunned silence in the bar, other customers obviously just as stunned as us. We even had offers of other places to eat on the island from a couple, thankfully we are islanders and know where to else to go. We were not the only ones turned away, considering they serve food all day! Waiting time for other poor unfortunate families with kids, 1 hour 30 minutes. The owner obviously did not want our custom as we were intending to treat our friends there for a meal, we left once they arrived. Disgusting customer service, poor attitude and factoring these two together i would say the food is disgusting too and we had a lucky escape. So to everyone, as an islander myself i would not recommend this place to you or anyone else and i shall whenever asked about this place tell them what to expect and go...

Honest review from and ex pub manager and 20 years in the catering industry

We visited from a nearby holiday site as it seemed like a nice place to lunch , we did read previous reviews about booking a table if you have a dog and that I would recommend as the dog friendly side only has 3 tables in it. A very Sturm lady behind the bar telling us that dogs are only welcome this side which wasn't obvious when entering the pub so maybe address this issue. Menus are written on a board so if you are eating outside you need to take a picture before you go out and decide. No draught anything yesterday as they had issues . Wasn't a great start . We found a spot in the garden to chose our food and then quickly left to find somewhere else to eat as the variety and choice of food was very poor and there wasn't something for everyone plus a bit on the pricey side for us. Shame because this is in an ideal place to be a little gem small changes make a big difference especially for large...

We came here tonight as a last minute decision and what a find. If your looking for a decent traditional pub meal you've come to the right place. The food was all homemade nothing pre frozen the house red wine was delicious local ales and home cooked food at an Incredibly reasonable price and the service. Well the service was amazing the lady was running the bar and serving and had a guy (Ben I think his name was) on hand running around making sure everyone was comfortable and well fed and watered it was packed. Quiz night. And we booked late and last minute and they both served us smiling! Hard to do in the hospitality industry when your packed to the rafters. I genuinely can't wait to come back. And am relieved finally that somewhere on Mersea has a good menu a specials board and everything cooked to order ! Thank you for making a mid week treat something really special. Ps try the lamb shank you will not be...

Amazingly friendly and welcoming pub, fantastic service and we would come here again just for the food which was immense - fish and chips were really "whale and chips" given the size of them and soooo fresh, we have never eaten such delicious fish and chips. Chips were to die for and the ambience in the pub both inside and in the fab garden was relaxed, warm and welcoming. Really made to feel like a local. Highly recommend and will return - Thank you so much Sarah and Jackie x

Loved the friendly vibe I felt as soon as I walked in & that gorgeous dog Mowgli I met there!! I ordered the veggie burger and my goodness it was the right amount of spicy and juicy crispiness! The best thing was the chips!! Extra crispy and fluffy in the middle!! Love!! Had Xmas dinner here and loved the vibe and ended up meeting new people here & grew a new appreciation for the warmth of this place - deffo recommend!:)
