My husband and I visited The Sherborne Arms today, on Bank Holiday Monday, intending to have a drink followed by a late lunch. We live locally, 5 miles away and frequent this pub most weekends. Upon arrival there was a couple with their 4 dogs in the bar area who were on their way out. We arrived with our 3 dogs. All the dogs started barking at each other briefly, as dogs can sometimes do. We then sat in the window with our drinks. Another gentleman came with his 2 little dogs and all the dogs had a bark at each other and quickly settled down. The manager behind the bar Ed, proceeded to say, ‘if your dogs bark then you’ll have to leave!’ in a very rude, abrupt manner. We questioned him and stated that there were no other customers in the bar area. The Sherborne Arms is meant to be a dog friendly pub which it clearly is not. Ed should NOT speak to customers so rudely. May we remind Ed that over 1,000 country pubs close each year so you cannot afford to alienate your customers, let alone dog owners, who probably equate to most of your customers. Also, on a cold Winters day when all your tourists have left you will need to rely on the locals to support you, which we certainly shall not, neither will our friends who...
Read moreOutstanding! Having been so disappointed with the experience we encountered at The Wheatsheaf in Northleach on my husband’s birthday, we hoped for better at The Sherborne Arms, also in Northleach. We were blown away by the difference - a truly outstanding experience from start to finish! Sophie greeted us with a welcoming smile and showed us to our table - with plenty of space for our dogs!! - such a simple thing to do. Caelum makes the best Negroni ever, having met him before at a previous location. It was an absolute pleasure to meet him again, knowing the outstanding customer service he delivers every time. And today was no exception. He was attentive, generous and welcoming, even though the pub was busy he took time to listen and to chat. This level of customer service as well as delicious food - the gnocchi is exceptional! - a suitable environment for our dogs and a warm pleasant traditional atmosphere makes all the difference and something the Wheatsheaf could learn from. We will definitely come back to The Sherborne when we are in the area again. Compliments to the chef, all the staff and particularly Caelum and Sophie. Highly recommend 5 stars...
Read moreI appreciate if we were to try again another night, another time, it might be a 5 star experience. However, booked for 2 weeks in advance, we arrived for my birthday treat on an obnoxiously noisy Friday evening, a party of 16 making the bar area deafening. Despite multiple empty and quiet tables in the restaurant area, we were seated practically in the bar next to the fire, which gently spit roasted me for the whole evening into a sweaty mess. Conversation with my wife was non existent due to the noise, and we bellowed our order to the pitifully understaffed and over busy waitresses. It was such a fail of an evening that we could not wait to get out of there, had no dessert or coffee, and left feeling incredibly miffed. Booked because we believed it to be one of the best gastro pubs in the area. Sadly based on our own experience, would not recommend. Food was ok but not sensational, we opted for chateaubriand, and I ordered a 2020 Bordeaux that came in a small glass, half way between a decent white wine glass and a sherry glass. All in all a frustrating evening. The bill was £130 so when you’re paying that, you...
