White Horse — Restaurant in Dacorum

I was invited for lunch on Sunday with friends who were very complimentary about the venue. However, I was disappointed with the service and unfortunately the Sunday beef roast. The server looked very dejected when no gratuity was given. The beef was chewy with lots of grissle. And the roast potatoes overcooked and the broccoli was very stringy. The brownies were obviously reheated in the microwave as it it was super hot on the inside and had gone like rock on the outside more like a biscuit than a sponge. In the microwave for too long. The vanilla ice cream was nothing to write home about and more like a supermarket or catering cheap excuse for vanilla ice cream and definitely not worth the £7 for such a small portion. Now let's talk service, regrettably as indicated what there was could have been better, much better. If we needed something we had to call a waiter/server and more than one as ours was obviously way too busy or unable to cope with the tables allocated to serve. Ordered drinks from the server and then after waiting some considerable time had to ask a second server where our drinks were. Having been served the beef roast we had to ask for mustard rather than it being offered. Yes, it was a busy Sunday lunch but if the service can't cope then maybe something needs to change. This is why a gratuity was not given. It's for good or at least basic service not for the disappointed service we got. I do hope that the owners/management do read this and take steps to better train the staff before they let them loose. We even had to call a different server to pay the bill. Well, what a mixed bag ! Myself and 3 others went for lunch together, and all of us selected a different Roast Lunch. I have to say my pork was lovely, though one person thought the food wasn't hot enough not stonking hot, like you'd hope it to be, being freshly cooked. However, a jug of hot gravy was duly delivered to warm the meat up, so that seemed to redeem the situation somewhat. All plates were cleared, nonetheless. For pudding, my sticky toffee & custard was really nice (and hot) but the other 3 people all ordered a mini dessert and coffee. Having worked in a Café before I know what a Cappuccino should be like, and neither of the 2 cups arriving at our table were worthy of being called Cappuccino, with hardly any milky froth on top, just oodles of chocolate sprinkles, and sadly the taste wasn't particularly appealing either. There must have been at least 7 or 8 minutes between coffees arriving and the desserts, meaning coffees were half drunk, rather than both arriving together again, a little disappointing. I was thoroughly impressed by our dining experience at The White Horse. The quality of the food far exceeded our expectations and was clearly a cut above what one might typically find at most gastro-style pubs. Each dish was prepared with great care and attention to detail, resulting in a truly memorable meal.

In particular, I would like to highlight the excellent range of gluten-free and vegan options available. It is rare to come across such a thoughtfully crafted gluten-free menu, and this was undoubtedly one of the best we have had the pleasure of choosing from. The variety and flavour of the dishes ensured that everyone at our table felt well catered for.

To finish, we enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding, which was absolutely superb. The dessert was beautifully presented and perfectly balanced in flavour — rich, indulgent, and the ideal way to end the meal. The pecan nuts on top were a nice surprise :)
