Great atmosphere, great staff, average food
First time visiting this pub having driven past its great location next to the canal many times. Absolutely perfect pub location.
Nice atmosphere inside with a lit fire, friendly patrons and welcoming staff. I enjoyed the quirky layout and cosy tables you may be able to grab if it’s quiet. Would visit here regularly for a drink if I was local to the area.
Despite several surrounding tables also having food this Monday evening the dining experience didn’t equal the good experience of having a pint. Myself and other table guest ordered our meals at the same time but separately. The delivery of said meals was long enough apart that it sadly meant that I received my meal as my friend finished theirs.
The portion of mushy peas was small enough that I had to query if there had been a mistake. Kindly the staff gave me a larger portion. Unknown if there had been a mistake or if the single spoon of peas was the standard serving.
Don’t misinterpret my review, I would happily return but probably wouldn’t have the fish and chips again. I would clarify at the bar that I was intending to eat at the same time as other orders to the same table if I were to have food here again.
One thing that I always have a small sigh about is these beautiful old pubs with characterful uneven floors do insist on four legged tables that wobble even if you were to have an Argos catalogue jammed under one of the table feet.
Swap the bases for those with three legs for pity’s sake. One sure way to distract from a nice meal is to have the commitment of holding your foot on a table leg. I will say that had I had mentioned this to the staff I don’t doubt that they would have been pleased to help, they appeared attentive throughout the evening.
Overall - look forward to returning for drinks in the future. Room for improvement regarding the dining experience, but food quality was good enough that I’d still recommend new patrons to order and make an opinion for themselves.
Landlord - feel free to reach out if you feel this review is unfair. I would be happy to hear...
Read moreWell I wanted to leave a nice review but that's not possible. Firstly walked into the pub and approached the bar. All staff were just chatting, ignoring me and my partner. After a minute of waiting I just shouted out should we sit anywhere or wait. Got told to sit wherever. Was not given a menu or told to order at the bar, no cutlery or napkins given. Found a seat and decided to use the online menu as I was not given one. The online menu has incorrect prices. I was not informed of this and it is false advertising. Decided to have two large fish and chips, double gin and a beer. Waited at the bar for what felt like ages. Finally managed to order, the young lady behind the till was friendly. Took my order and asked if I wanted mushy peas or not with the two fish and chips. I said no thanks, just as they come. Paid the bill and didnt think anything of the price. Food came out, portions were comically small for a large fish and chips. Asked for a copy of the receipt and saw the fish and chips listed at £16 each! Their online menu says its 13.95 for a large with 1 pound extra for mushy peas. Inquired about the bill after the food and was told yeah its 15 for the fish and chips and 1 pound for mushy peas. I confronted the staff about their online pricing and showed proof that it said 13.95. Was told well is what it is. 15 pounds and you had mushy peas which I also declined so that brought the total to 16 each. Asked for a manager and apparently there was not one on the shift... what pub does not have a manager on hand. We were NOT offered a refund or anything to sort out the issue. Was told that the discrepancy would be told to the owner who I am sure knows his online menu prices differ... absolutely ghastly performance from the business not even offering to fix what is wrong. I understand its only a couple quid but its false advertising and me and my partner feel like we've been lied too. No help from the staff what so ever. Trading standards...
Read moreWe originally went to the pub over 10 years ago and found it was lovely, however would never go again, or recommend it too!
My husband decided to surprise me and my 3 kids, and took us for mothers day last weekend. The road leading up to the carpark was closed, which wasn't the pubs fault but did mean we had to go 10 minutes around.
We got there and it was absolutely freezing inside. We were the only people in the pub the whole time.
The service was very slow and inattentive.
Our food came, and as you can see from the images, my daughters burger looked like it was made from scraps of burnt pieces of beef. It didn't even fill out the bun. Her chips looked like they were the small bits leftover when enough food isn't made.
My other two children ordered chips which were a whopping £12 (when the online menu says they're £5), and no bigger then a mcdonald's medium portion.
I got the vegetarian sweet potato roast. The sweet potato part was alright. But it came with, what I can only describe as, microwave veg. It looked like leftover pieces. And the gravy already poured all over. The roasted potatos weren't even properly roasted.
My husband ordered the pie of the day. He said it was fine. It wasn't amazing or bad, he did the say there wasn't enough gravy and it was very watery - though he got it at the side and not pre poured over, like mine.
I wouldn't recommend if you've not...
