This pub is a fine replacement for the original pub in Sheldon, the Victoria Inn, which went defunct years ago and was notable for being more of a house than a pub. I remember as a 19 year old lad being served a pint decanted from a jug which in turn had been filled up from a barrel in the cellar by an old dear whilst we were sat in what appeared to be her best parlour. Although this one was built in 1995 it is indistinguishable from a genuine old inn. Inside is cosy with an open fire, the barmaid provides treats for dogs from her pockets, the baguette sandwiches are huge and generous, the accompanying salad is worthy of a snooty gastro pub. A side serving of chips is enough for two people. The other customers meals also looked to be temptingly good home made food - and much to my delight - they are not at the usual Peak rip off prices. eg Decent meals for £8 to £9. Baguettes under £4, chips under £2. There were plenty of other customers eating here on a dull Thursday afternoon in the middle of October. Well recommended.
I've been here a few times since I wrote my last 4 year old review above but what I said then still applies - even the prices. It's one of the best pubs in the Peak district with regard to quality food, value for money, cosiness,...
Read moreHow long this establishment has been known by this name I don't know, there was a time in the recent past when there was a penchant for calling pubs "amusing" names. It was however, encouraging to find it busy on a Tuesday lunchtime with not many free tables. We placed our order at the bar whilst ordering our drinks and retired to the table in the far corner. The starters appeared very quickly and whilst the garlic mushrooms that I ordered appeared to be appetising, the garlic mayo, of which there wasn't sufficient, had more than a hint of the catering pack. Next up was the steak and ale pie which came with chips, fresh veg which included carrot, cauliflower, broccoli and peas which were all cooked perfectly (pay no attention to the huge amounts of veg in the pic, my wife doesn't do veg, I'm always the grateful recipient). The pie itself while nicely filled but with only a cursory pastry top was ok with lots of meat but for me it was a bit lacking. The service was fast but the conviviality was utterly absent, OK, we're not locals but a bit of friendliness goes a long way, I know,I work in the...
Read moreStumbled across this place looking for somewhere to eat and what a find it was. A proper old fashioned pub serving a fairly limited and some may say ( not me) basic menu but exceptionally well done. I had the steak pie and my wife the cottage pie both with the option of chips and vegetables. Both dishes were absolutely first class with both the minced beef and steak in the pie being really good quality. The vegetables were nicely cooked ( not boiled to mush) and the portion size generous. Clearly all fresh ingredients and everything prepared on site and piping hot. Sticky toffee pudding and custard was equally of top quality and was actually " sticky" to eat and not some random sponge with toffee sauce poured over. I had a pint of Doom bar perfectly kept and served and alcohol free beer is available. The toilets passed inspection by my wife with flying colours ( no mean feat). Very reasonably priced particularly for quality food and a friendly lady behind the bar. Must also mention it is dog friendly and also have ashtrays outside for the lepers amongst us. We will...
