The man who greeted us and took us to our table was very pleasant and made us feel welcome. Food was nice but it’s quite pricey for Dover!! £2.95 for popadoms (you get 2 as a portion) they’re baked not fried. For that price it doesn’t include any pickles either, you have to buy separately. £3 for a small pot of chopped onion! Crazy!! £0.99 for mint yoghurt tiny position and lime pickle. Most of the starters £10 and main meals at least £12 each. Not traditional Indian with no mention of typical dishes like madras, vindaloo, jalfrezi, chicken tikka masala which isn’t a problem, but if that’s what you expect, you won’t find it here. The curries we had were tasty, but nothing to rave about. My mum had a king prawn curry and the prawns were large shrimps, definitely not king prawns!! They also overcharged us on our drinks and added £1 to every alcoholic drink which resulted in just under £10 being incorrectly added to the bill. Luckily we noticed and they did rectify it by deducting 5% off the bill. (Photo attached) £4.50 for half a pint of peroni????? No thanks!! Young lad who served us was nice enough but the food came out in drips and drabs, we had to wait for our side dishes and we’d already started eating our mains. Due to its location they really need to up their game as there are other “better” Indian restaurants closer to the town. Did we enjoy our meal? Yes we did. Would we return? Probably not, we prefer cinnamon island and Calcutta port, which are slightly cheaper and in our opinion, better than this restaurant. Hopefully they take into consideration their location and competition in the area, which personally I feel needs to reflect in their prices.

Really really good Indian food! Our second time eating at Chef de Mumbai and I would confidently say it's one of the best true Indian cuisine restaurants. The starter was samosa chaat, while not exactly from the streets of Mumbai, it holds well for restaurant offering. Our toddler had cheese garlic naan, which is gooey soft and delightful. For mains the butter chicken is done right with pieces of chicken tikka in a tomato gravy that is well balanced. The Goan prawn curry is more Keralan than Goan, but is distinctively different in flavour, and delightful. Plain rice is the right neutral accompaniment to savour the differences of these dishes. We tried the chili cheese naan as well and were happily surprised that it's made with just the right amount of green birds eye chilies and cheese, so be prepared for the slight bite. What's great about this restaurant is that they focus on dishes that they are good to excellent at making and not trying to do everything with mediocrity. This allows them to produce closer true Indian flavours that are not toned down with sugary sweet fare so disappointingly typical of many other so called Indian restaurants. Staff are friendly, attentive and make an effort. Highly recommended to all.

The Chef de Mumbai is a gem. The food is excellent - painstakingly prepared right in front of your eyes in the open kitchen. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Nothing is too much trouble. They went the extra mile to prepare a dish for us, with accompanying sauces, containing no onions as one of us has an allergy. There was plenty of chicken in our dishes which was very tender. The menu is not run-of-the-mill Indian food and contains unusual but very tasty dishes. So if you are looking for expertly and delicately spiced Indian food with a difference look no further. There is a large car park suitable for camper vans. Eat at the restaurant and park overnight free of charge. The Chef de Mumbai has been open for about six months and should not be confused with Namaste or the Swingate Inn which no longer trade at this address on the A258 Deal Road out of Dover. There is a very friendly vibe at the Chef de Mumbai - all the staff and chefs were courteous, smiling and approachable. We had the pleasure to visit on the 17th October 2023 and look forward to the next time.

I recently travelled back from Spain by motorhome via Dover and was looking for somewhere for an overnight stop, so that I could visit my sister who lives in Hythe, early the following morning. A motorhome App I subscribe to advised that there was an Indian restaurant located less than 3 miles (8 minutes) from the Ferry Terminal that allowed overnight parking if you were dining in the restaurant! This worked well as we were due to arrive in Dover just after 6 in the evening, so we duly booked. The Chef de Mumbai has large car parking areas, is easy to get to and is located in an impressive former hotel. It has a large bar area separate from the even larger airy restaurant, which features at its back an open kitchen area visible from 3 sides, where the 2 chefs can be seen preparing each dish as it is ordered. At 79 I am a lifelong fan of Indian food, having discovered it shortly after joining the RAF and have developed a discerning palate having eaten it all over the world . For me, the food in the Mumbai was a revelation! Because of the spices involved in their preparation, even good curries are usually presented as an anonymous brown concoction in a dish! Not so the case in the Mumbai where the colours of all the fresh ingredients used by the chefs could still be identified as the courses were being eaten! The crispy Potato and Onion Bhajis were augmented by tasty sliced baked potato slices basted in spices, and the Samosa Chat was presented in a way I have never seen before and tasted incredible. The Nans, which I had watched the chefs preparing (my choice was a Peshwari Nan), were succulent and had been cooked to perfection. The Pilau rice was fluffy and flavoursome whilst the Murgh Kadaia, which I had never tried before was just as spicy as I had hoped. All in all we had a super evening idly watching our food being prepared whilst drinking Indian Beer, the only downside being that we were unable to complete the meal with a dessert as the portions of the first two courses were so large! So, if you’ve never tried Indian Food, or have been unimpressed when you have done so, and are anywhere near, or passing through Dover, then the Chef de Mumbai is a mandatory place for...

Travelling from South Wales to France in a motorhome and found this place who advertise a free overnight carpark as long as you spend some money at the bar.. an accepted and acceptable offer. Pulled in on an Saturday evening of a bank holiday weekend and found a place to park the motorhome and went in. We were warmly greeted by a young man who was full of enthusiasm and who made us feel welcomed. We were taken to a nice cosy table and greeted by our waitress who also gave a warm welcome. Drinks and meals ordered and we were brought a few poppadoms and chutneys. We started munching into these and realised that THIS Indian establishment felt better than others we had experienced. (I have eaten 'Indian' food fairly often for decades, so have had good experience). Main meals arrived in good time... Murghi Makhani, Paneer TIkka Masala and some rices, along with Peshwari naan and we started this meal. What a stunning meal it was... delicate and subtle spices made an absolutely fantastic taste and combination. What more need I say? Towards the end of the meal we got chatting to the young man who appeared to be the owner who explained to us that the chefs all come from a variety of regions in India and bring with them speciality dishes from their own regions... THIS is not your average 'Indian' food establishment that dishes out the UK weekend or takeaway food prepared by Bangladeshis, but an authentic Indian premisis that prepares traditional and authentic Indian food, made by Indian chefs who clearly have a great skill. For motorhomers who would be interested, we had a fairly quiet night of sleep with the occasional car travelling by, but the road is a 'fast' road and as a vehicle passes, the sound is quite loud. Luckily, we were up early to catch a ferry, but will, not would...WILL...
