We popped in here whilst driving past one day, essentially for a drink and a bit of history of Dunkeswell airfield. It was very quiet when we entered, being the only ones apart from staff. It's nicely laid out, with sumptuous sofas, and lots of tables to eat. Whilst not ordering food, we did have some fruit juices and a bottle of real ale, but sadly not able to have a pint as presumably it doesn't last long enough between busy periods. Not to worry, the Doom Bar was great, matched only by the reportoire of those serving. We were nicely greeted, beaming smile, and engaging conversation, and we were informed the best time to see planes taking off and the skydivers landing (it wasn't today!). We did manage to catch one small aircraft alight, and a helicopter doing trials possibly post service. The views are great, you feel part of the runway when sat outside, and the place looks great; large model aircraft hang from the ceiling, with the Vulcan being the very one they used for wind testing the full size version! They do a Sunday carvery which we're told is...
Read moreService was very terrible. Stood waiting to be seated for 10mins with various waitresses looking at us but not saying anything whether they would be with us in a moment etc. We had to approach the bar to ask if someone can seat us. Once we were seated the lady then said she would be back in a moment to give us menus. We waited a further 15mins for us to then ask again if we could have a menu to then only find out they were near us. We were then told we could not order breakfast as it had gone past the breakfast deadline time which we were very disappointed with. Eventually we were able to order a brunch each for the 4 of us. I was not allowed to ask for a side of toast and butter due to it being on the breakfast menu but could order a side of bread and butter, with the bread toasted which seemed a lot of hassle. Eventually we ate and must admit the food was perfect. 5/5 for food 1/5...
Read moreVisited today for the first time in a few years. It still has the same feel.
We had a couple of burgers and this is where you lost a star on your rating.
The presentation was sloppy. It was just thrown on the plate, grease drips on the plate from where the burger was made on the plate. The burger patty was cooked to an inch of its life, it was dry. I'm guessing either done in a fryer, or precooked and reheated, same vibe with the sausages.
Then thrown together on a plate, with a shovel of chips thrown down. Somehow there were chips in my burger, under the bap.
The plate was missing something, some garnish, a bit of colour.
But saying that it still tasted great. It's just a shame that the £13 meal was cooked and presented like a £7 meal.
Chocolate cake is to die for. You know it's homemade because it was slightly burnt. As per usual, we will...
