The White Hart — Restaurant in East Devon

We visit The White Hart regularly for drinks, but we hadn’t eaten there before. We decided to visit for the Sunday carvery. We were running slightly late due to the bad weather (driving from Exeter), so I called and let the pub know. The land lady Shantelle) answered the phone and told me it wasn’t a problem but the carvery was starting to run low as they had been very busy.. When we arrived we were seated at a nice big table which was good as we had our dogs with us (we were camping at Castle Brake and our friends drove from Exeter). When we went to get our carveries the chef had kept some food back for us and had made us some fresh vegetables as he knew we were on our way - now that’s great customer service. The staff are lovely and the food was so tasty - thank you for a lovely Sunday afternoon - until...

Absolutely shocking customer service!

When we asked about dairy free food the waitress said I have no idea as I'm not one of them!

We booked a table, and as soon as we sat down the waitress said we needed to order quickly as they have other customers.

My daughter ordered a bacon cheese burger, when it was brought to the table the waitress explained that the chef had forgotten the cheese and bacon, she then said that the cheese and bacon was being prepared and would be served later, when she refused the food was taken back. This meant this was served after the rest of the dining party had finished.

Then we were overcharged. Having paid for someone else's drinks.

Had to return the next day for a refund, no apology was made. So I said we would not return, the waitress...

10 of us in a walking group had lunch there, the general feeling amongst the walkers was the food was fair to good, I ordered the hot chicken and bacon salad which was very disappointing a whole piece of chicken fried in one piece was tough and chewy, I cook this myself at home all you need is diced chicken breast small new potatoes chunks of ham or bacon + a bed of hearts of romaine lettuce all fried over a high heat with lashings of honey and mustard dressing added to the pan half a minute before tipping it all onto the bed of lettuce on the plate hope the chef reads this. lovely atmosphere in the pub and all the staff were very kind and helpful the 🍺 was good too recommend but give the chicken and bacon...
