Very disappointing evening at the Royal Oak. Previously we have had exceptional meals here so recommended to friends that we should eat here on New Year's Eve. Our friends booked the table via the online booking and received confirmation of our time of 6.40pm. However on arrival we were told we'd come at the wrong time, we had to prove to staff that we were at the correct time but staff made no apology for their mistake just pointed us to an available table. All but one special was already sold out at 6.40pm and many of the main menu items were also unavailable. Which we found disappointing for these to be sold out so early in the evening. This meant that out choices were limited. My husband and I chose cod cheeks for starters. These were basically 3 battered fish balls, the batter was greasy and flavourless. Our friends had the garlic mushrooms which had very few mushrooms and a lot of bread. For mains I had the hanging chicken kebab which was tasty but my plate seemed to be overwhelmingly full of peppers as the salad had peppers and the kebab had peppers. My husband and one friend had sea bass. This was served in a bag that was wrapped in tin foil. For a presentation point of view it looked messy and from a burnt finger point of view it was nearly impossible to open. My husband commented that it was tasteless which he was disappointed with as he loves Thai inspired flavours. Our friend had requested chips with hers but was told chef won't do that! The final meal was beef ragu. This looked very dry but our friend stated the pasta was wet and soggy. Finally deserts. Everything on the menu was dairy based so that meant I was unable to have anything. My husband had chocolate brownie which he said was OK. Our friends ordered a lemon meringue pie to share. However it was tiny. So they were very disappointed. The atmosphere was dull with no music and staff polite but unfriendly. As we left there were no smiles or thank you for coming. Overall it was a disappointing...
Read moreAfter hearing very good reports with regards to the food in the pub/bar, I decided to give the 'Knife & Cork' restaurant a try yesterday.
I went for the two courses (at £17.95) and had a starter of Homemade Chicken Liver & Smoked Pancetta Pate, which was very good, although a little more toast/bread would have been nice and followed that with Roast Pork and seasonal vegetables.
Unfortunately there was no crackling with the Pork, mainly due to it being a loin and I have to say, for the price of the meal, I was surprised at the small portion of meat on offer. The seasonal vegetables were very nice, the mashed potatoes excellent, along with a lovely gravy but the roast potatoes were very poor.
The rest of the table went for a puds and they were superb and couldn't be faulted.
Overall, the starters and puds were excellent but the main (for the cost) was below par. I will certainly try the Royal Oak again but this time I will try the daily special board in the Restaurant or maybe the food in the bar.
The staff were attentive and the food arrived quickly .., and my apologies if I sound picky but coming from a catering background and baring in mind the price of the meal, I had hoped for a better main.
NB. I would rate the restaurant at 3 and 1/2 stars but unfortunately, you are unable to do this on...

Asked for two halves of larger shandy and a pint .Waitress came with two pints and a half .Manager came to take order .Started by telling us that only one chicken kebab left as no chicken !! Very strange to run out of chicken at 7 pm on a Saturday bank holiday weekend. So husband had the lamb .I had the chicken .Mum had the veg one .When it arrived I can honestly say I've never seen chips like them.Raw anemic microwaved chips .Definitely not triple cooked like stated .Chicken and all veg covered in white fry light. Not one person came to ask if everything waseems ok until plates came to be taken by the Waitress. Obviously she could see as hadn't been eaten .When she asked if every thing was ok we told her politely. She just replied Sorry Guys .Sorry Guys to a 49 year old woman and a 74 year old woman! ! So sorry we will not be returning and think that alot more training is required not to call female...
