My local recently went on reduced hours and stopped serving lunches except for one Sunday a month so I have been looking for an alternative. On my way back from Framlingham to Charsfield this week I passed through Kettleburgh and noticed "The Chequers" free house and decided to give it a try for Sunday lunch. I arrived just on opening time at noon and was one of the first patrons in. They have a fairly extensive menu written on blackboards but no printed menu. I mention this because when I requested the dessert menu, I was brought a blackboard listing the offerings. I ordered the lamb shank with new potatoes (could have mash or chips instead) and vegetables as my main. The 'vegetables' turned out to be cauliflower, carrots and parsnips. The food was well prepared and very tasty but the sauce had a bit too much mint for my taste that overpowered the rest of the main. It wasn't unpalatable but would have been close too perfect with less. But as my mother always said, "never apologise for a meal, someone will like it just like that!" I did clean my plate, so I guess I couldn't list it as a complaint. For dessert I ordered the chocolate ice cream brownie cake and then was asked if I would like cream or ice cream with it! I was a bit confused by this offer of ice cream with ice cream but was told it was vanilla ice cream and cost no extra! If it is free, I'm in! Was very tasty and sadly I had started to tuck in before remembering to take a picture! It's a bit off the beaten track but worthwhile a visit. (about 2.5 miles (4km) from Charsfield) and they also have a B&B which has good reviews too. It is a fairly 'old fashioned' pub but this is part of its charm. It isn't trying to portray itself as anything else and the friendly atmosphere indicates this. If you are looking for a 21st century "gastro pub" to waste your money in, this isn't it! Here you get a decent plateful of food and leave feeling well fed and content. The food is flavoursome and reasonably priced. All in all, an enjoyable meal and I shall definitely...
Read moreI had to go to Suffolk on business on the 14th October, I had travelled up from Brentwood, little did I know what would be in store for me. The whole area had got flooded from the torrential rain, I was literally driving through puddles that were more like mini rivers, it was quite scary. I saw the Chequers Inn and pulled over and went in, I was hungry, damp and needed the toilet and a bit of comfort I guess. Oh my days what a beautiful place I had entered in to and what a warm welcome I got. The staff there were so accommodating, they lit the log burners to make everywhere cosy, despite river banks bursting around them and water coming towards us, I was one of their customers and they really couldn’t do enough for me. As time went on I enjoyed a gorgeous meal there, met many locals who had come in and who had also been stranded, at one point I even asked if I could take a look at their rooms as I was certain I would not be getting home that day. The rooms was absolutely amazing, very high end specifications in all and so reasonably priced. I knew I was most certainly in the right place. The staff in this place looked after everyone, they were doing dinners making sure everyone was warm, it was complete chaos outside with the weather, yet inside you would not have even known what was unravelling. This pub and its staff are a credit to this village. Since getting back home I am most definitely going back for a long stay, what an incredible place, what a find, as the saying goes every grey cloud has a silver lining, I was so lucky to find the Chequers Inn and to be so looked after as well. Thank you for looking after me that day, I will most definitely be recommending you to everyone and I will most definitely be returning. The way you looked after everyone was just amazing, I will never forget. Thank you...
Read moreHad heard mixed reviews about this previously run country inn which has had had A face-lift nothing looks different from the exterior, car park is unmarked space with large stones, akin to Aldeburgh beach. My friend uses a 3 wheeled walker and I use a crutch. I did not see any amendments made for disabled access and we both struggled to enter.||There were only 4 others in the pub and I understand this was the owner with her children||Menu was short, only 5 main courses to choose from, slightly higher than most pubs. My friend chose hummus and kofta followed by mushroom risotto her risotto arrived b4 the main!! WIter tried to say that we had asked for all food to be delivered together. There was nothing on the menu that I liked and I requested a cheese omelette. Neither meal was very hot. We declined pudding or coffee and asked for the bill. I was overcharged for brie starter which I didn't have and after discussion with barmaid the cost of starter was removed.|Overall would not step foot inside this establishment, it does nor reach the standard of Ufford crown Fram Station or Wilford Bridge. It is not suitable for children and if they want to make a profit then they need a separate lunch menu aimed at different clientele. Very disappointed and young waiter looked lost. Need to develop their...
