We had a nice meal here last night but the overall experience was a little disappointing.
On arrival, no one greeted us and were left to stand around in the middle of the bar area while the owners took their time to finish serving others. It would have been nice to have received a more friendly welcome while we waited.
We asked if we could have a table that was available and set for two in the more lively bar area, and were told no, with no explanation. They added two more settings to that table and sat a group of four there while we were moved to a quieter side room. After a few minutes that group moved and we were not offered the free table we had requested, which sat empty for the rest of our meal.
The food presentation is attractive, and we enjoyed the mushroom starter, but the goats cheese with pear and leek was not hugely flavourful. The fish and chips was tasty, but a little dry. The fish pie was lovely but a tad under-seasoned. The white chocolate parfait with cherry was very tasty but one of us found it sickly sweet. The sticky toffee pudding was more like a moist ginger cake - with no sticky toffee sauce!
Service was lacklustre and frankly a little aloof. Empty glasses weren't collected and we didn't feel like the waiting staff checked in on us much.
All in all, it's a pretty typical Suffolk pub-with-food, and the food is tasty and all home cooked. But its fine dining aspirations, sadly for us, didn't really deliver on expectations. We've been to many pubs in the area with tasty food and we found this one a little fussy and...
Read moreDecided to stop here a couple of weeks ago on the way back home as the reviews and menus looked good!
Nice pub / restaurant, seemed to be a bit of both which is fine by us. Food wise for taste and presentation it's a five star but some minor details and lack of personal interaction / service changed the overall rating.
As is often the case, we had a mix of starters, Sunday roasts and a dessert. The team were quite accommodating, able to get a child's roast and our starters out in less than five minutes! Very speedy service.
My blue cheese mouse starter on the menu listed it as coming with 'maple baked fig fine tart' but it actually came with fresh fig and a pastry round. Bit disappointed but still polished it off no problem!
The dessert of frangipane slice was supposed to come with roast plum but instead came with fresh normal plum; again bit disappointed but the plate went back empty.
We also had a different server at each point or course and so no personal interaction was built up or given; there were also no check backs which is a little unusual these days. Those small details did let the quality of the food down but overall it was an enjoyable visit, we'd consider returning but...
Read moreDisappointing meal, We tried the food at The White Horse based on a solid reputation for good food and service. A warm and friendly welcome we were soon shown our table being December we choose the festive option of roast turkey The food soon arrived, Norfolk turkey, stuffing dry and tasteless, honey glazed carrots unglazed. Sprouts and chestnuts without any chestnuts and sprouts so hard you had to hold them down with a knife for fear they would fly off to the next table when trying to fork them. Roast duck fat potatoes were neither golden nor crispy. Any heat in the food was soon sucked out by the cold plates it was served on, Cranberry sauce had to be requested and pigs in blankets arrived as a side because the chef forgot to plate them up which summed up the total apathy chef had for this dish If a Toby carvery is your thing you would probably think this dish ok but would baulk at the £24.75 cost of this meal given the price the most expensive item on the menu we felt robbed The glowing reviews suggest this Chef can do a lot better sadly didn't turn up the...
