Following good reports from various friends and acquaintances, I booked 'The Axe' for the Annual Group Lunch of the Leighton Buzzard-based singing group, Rock of Ages, of which I'm Secretary. On the 23rd of January 2015, Thirty-three of us sat down in their Function Room and were served an excellent 3-course lunch by attentive and efficient waiting staff. And it wasn't even a Set Menu. Although we had to pre-order (which is quite normal for a large party) we were offered free range of their entire and varied normal lunch menu; and the chef must have worked his socks off to provide the 13 different Main Courses which were eventually chosen between us; not to mention the smaller range of Starters and Desserts we chose. I didn't hear a single word of complaint from any of our lot - and trust me: that's a FIRST as far as our seven-to-date group lunches are concerned. I subsequently received a stream of complimentary emails from our members; all saying we should book there again next year - which I certainly intend to do. Don't be put off by the outdated reviews which are still knocking-about online. The new proprieters, Jake, Ryan & crew, have turned this place around; and serve generous portions of good food - traditionally served, rather than over-priced food piled up in twee towers! - as seems to be the norm these days. I cannot recommend it...
Read moreNice "all you need" little rooms, annexe style in the carpark/garden away from the pub. Comfy beds and the room was clean. We found the bathroom quite dark as there was no window and the lighting was dim. The "Breakfast included" message was a little confusing via Booking.com as the pub was not open for breakfast, there was milk, a small orange juice cartoon with a straw, a cereal bar and a mini size box of cornflakes left in the room. This should have been explained more clearly when booking but perhaps this isn't the pubs error but booking.com. We left the key in the room and our front door open when leaving as there was no drop box or anyone around to check out, so again not clear but it wasn't a big deal. The pub serves a wide selection of drinks to enjoy in the garden. A pleasant stay and somewhere comfy to rest after our...
Read moreA proper village with sensible prices that all can afford. Polite friendly staff, good selection of drinks large open garden area and a large pay area for children too. This pub has a great reputation for Sunday roasts which again are a healthy size and will not break the bank. There are rooms to rent if you're on a business trip or need a room for the night. They are in a detached purposely built building in the carpark and look spacious and clean. There is a pool table, large sports screen and jukebox in the rear bar too. Overall this pub is affordable and caters for everyone's taste and puts on a great Sunday roast and lots of other food. Great pub with a lively friendly atmosphere. Perfect for...
