Stopped here during a family holiday in the Lake District after seeing the “artisan bakery” sign. What a disappointment.
The bread was bland, poorly textured, and clearly not fermented properly. No structure, no flavor—just a rushed dough pretending to be sourdough. As someone who runs a restaurant in the French Riviera, I know what proper fermentation looks like. This wasn’t it.
The cakes were no better. Heavy, greasy, and overloaded with butter—more like clumsy home baking than anything you'd expect from a serious bakery.
What really shocked me is how confidently they present themselves as artisan bakers. In reality, they’re amateurs trying to cash in on a trend without even understanding the basics of fermentation or balance in baking. It feels like a branding exercise, not a food business run by people who care about craft.
Add to that the unfriendly, cold service, and it was easily the worst food stop of our entire trip. I genuinely don’t understand the hype.
Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone who actually values quality or...
Read moreAfter frequent visits over the years, disappointing visit today ...!! Que left for takeaway, right for eat in ....!!! but once you've been seated and made your choices go and join the left q for take away . ...this was taking forever due to indecisive customers not making there minds up on what cake to pick, children changing there minds ..one staff member on the till taking orders and boxing cakes up......twenty minutes before even placing our order then we were told no sourdough bread ( thought you were a bakery aswell) agreed to have a roll for our clubhouse sandwich or should I say chicken, bacon salad bun !! we had to take our own cold drinks from the fridge, no offer of ice, helped ourselves to warm glasses off the window sill and walked back to our table with our cutlery, napkins and wooden spoon. Felt the price £10 for the chicken bun, didnt reflect the dine in experience we received as more like self service. 4 front of house staff on and have seen it busier with a more efficient service. Very...
Read moreI was taken to Bakehouse Born and Bread by my friend Jo. She lives in the neighbouring village and recommended it for breakfast on Saturday morning after parkrun. From the outside the place is somewhat nondescript, but inside it looks really inviting. There are tables of different sizes, and sofas in front of a wood burning stove. The queuing system seemed to confuse a lot of people (go left and queue along the wall to wait for a table, or go right and queue to the counter to order) but it all seemed to work out in the end.
The menu is really inviting. I had the Brekky Bun with mushroom (there’s a bacon and sausage version too) which was really tasty, although if I order it again I’ll be asking to have it on sourdough toast as the potato bun was a little too sweet for my taste. To drink I had an oat milk latte, which was very good.
The counter at the front was full of really inviting sweet and savoury treats. It was so difficult to pick just two! I think I’ll have to return to sample the rest!
Highly...
