I'm updating this review after visiting this pub a second time. I have kept the original review below, as it remains relevant. On our second visit, we ate from the main menu (it was a weekend, so the meal deal was not available). We had a vegetarian burger with chips, and sausage and mash for food. Both meals were good value, as before, very well cooked and prepared. I was a little disappointed that my chips were French fries, rather than chips, but they were edible. The burger was tasty and filling. The sausage and mash came with three large sausages, a nice dollop of mash, peas, and plenty of gravy (which puts to shame the Cross Keys in Hamsterley, if you find my review of that place). So, we were again happy with the food. However, we found the drinks disappointing, again. On this occasion we had a tea and an orange juice. The orange juice was about 150ml from a bottle. It was meagre for the money. And, while the tea only cost £1.40, it was served in a cup half-filled with water. So, it was only half a cup of tea. Hot water costs nothing. Fill the cup, or better still, put it in a pot with the tea bag and still make a profit of £1.20 per order. We also had a packet of crisps while we waited for the food (we know the food can take a while to arrive). It was a standard size packet of Tyrrell's. We were charged £1.55 for a packet of crisps. I understand that pubs need to make a profit, and I realise the profit is made from drinks, but seriously, this pub needs to review how much it charges for basics like drinks and crisps because what they offer does not match the price they are charging and switched-on customers, who try to support pubs, end up feeling a little ripped off. It is a shame, because we like this place, we love the food and the prices charged for the food menu are reasonable; but the drinks and snacks are pretty outrageous, in our view. We went here for lunch and were impressed with this country-style pub in a tranquil, quiet corner of Catterick. The Lunch Deal is available until 3pm and offers a reasonably sized meal for a decent cost, offering good value for money. The fish and chips meal was reasonably sized (the fish wasn't massive but it was adequate for the price), well cooked and pleasant. The Vegetable (vegan) chili was a surprise as it came with a good amount of tortilla chips, guacamole, rice and other additions for just over £8. Less old value were the drinks. Unfortunately, the bar keep had trouble with the idea of a pint of lime cordial and lemonade and we didn't really get anywhere near a pint (because we didn't have ice) and she initially didn't add the cordial. Overall, we found the place really friendly, good food and decent value for money. A rarity in today's Britain!

So good we went twice! What a great find We stumbled here while driving as a group from London to Edinburgh with 5 adults and a dog. great place serving fresh made food quickly well into the afternoon. A really cheery, helpful and accommodating welcome to a great VERY dog friendly pub just a few minutes off the A1. There's some outdoor seating when the sun shines overlooking a very pretty village green, complete with a stream and some ducks, to stretch human and dogs' legs. The slightly smaller light lunch menu was a godsend for those with sensible appetites while the greedies among us left very satisfied. We enjoyed our visit so much we came back on the way home a few days later!

Upon arriving we were greeted with a very rude lady stating that we should have booked and they are very busy. We had a general walk around the pub to find only 1 table eating and a few locals having a drink. We sat and I went and ordered drinks. When asked for a pint, I got given a pint glass with 1/4 empty, so may as well been half. We ordered food and 45 minutes later the food arrived (no change in the amount of people), I had received something that wasn’t my order and was clearly just a frozen chicken breast that had been defrosted. Not even fresh. The food overall wasn’t anything special and I could’ve made it better at home.

I came here for food with my family as my Brother lives close by, and he mentioned that the pub served meals on an evening.

The draft/cask beer selection was pretty limited, but they had a wide range of spirits including some very nice Bourbon and two shelves of Gin, with a wide array of tonics to accompany them.

The food menu had lots of variety, with a good amount of vegetarian and low calorie options and contained the traditional pub classics we all know and love.

After ordering our meals (5 of us) took a bit longer than expected (around 40 minutes and we were the only ones in the pub eating) but everything was hot, well presentes and tasted great.

Prices were very reasonable, between £6.50 and £12 for food and £2.30 to £4 for an alcoholic drink.

The staff were very friendly and I'd defiantly recommend they get a chance...

We were here Friday Saturday and Sunday for both food and drinks. On the Friday and Saturday there was a great atmosphere. The staff and customers were all very friendly and it was a bonus that it was dog friendly. We booked in for Sunday lunch as a party of 11 and it was excellent. Portion sizes were just right and the food was delicious, the red cabbage was a personal favourite. We pre ordered in advance to make it easier for them and again when we needed to add in meals or make adjustments they took it in their stride on what seemed quite a busy Sunday. When we asked about other places in the local area it seems that some have fallen foul of covid and closed. Its clear to see why the Bay Horse hasn't. If we are in the area again, we will make sure to call in for a pint...
