WARNING!!! DO NOT VISIT I wouldn’t recommend this pub under its current landlords to anyone. I’ve been visiting this pub for nearly 10 years under several different land lords, and most of them were excellent until the current one. The landlord has a terrible attitude and seems to constantly want an argument and will always argue the toss with you the paying customer. The food has usually been good at the black dog but under its new land lords has took a dive, it’s hit and miss whether it comes frozen from the microwave or not. If you’re going out for food visit the bay horse inn (10 minutes towards Chorley incredible food) or to San Marino 30 seconds up the road). The landlord at the black dog is known to reverse into customers cars and then get out and tell the onlookers ā€œit’s the customers faultā€, so if you want a dent in your car and a cold meal visit here. It’s not cheap either it’s top end pub price and considering your food has been thrown into a microwave you do have to question where they dream their prices up from. The lagers aren’t bad but be careful which glass you get given, you shouldn’t be given a glass that is more then 3 years old (you can tell the manufacture year of a glass by looking for the m number example m23 would mean manufactured in 2023.) I’ve been given a 10 year old dirty glass before and then asked for it to be changed only to be given another dirty 6 year old one!! When I went back for the third time I was met with one very angry and disgruntled landlady who pulled her face and slammed another one down infront of me. I hope you don’t like to sit comfortably either because there are several seats that look like they’ve been dragged out of the Second World War backwards. I can only assume the current landlord was a last choice option because I don’t think he could run a hot bath. Please please avoid this pub I hope Joseph holts see this and take action. For such a brilliant pub in a beautiful place it really has been run...

Visited again in Sept 2024 and it was not as good as previous visits. The number of vegan food options had reduced to 2 (Sri Lankan curry and a chilli), which were also not as high quality as previous visits. The atmosphere was not as welcoming/friendly as previously either. Hence the scores were originally 5 star but have now dropped to standard 3 star.

This is a lovely little pub that I often frequent after a walk in the area. It has good (vegan) food and beers and it is dog friendly. The staff are always friendly and helpful, but can 'fill up' quickly around lunch time, especially at weekends. ++++++Previous visit comments below++++ Visited again in Dec. 2023; after a post 'clear the cobs webs' walk going into Christmas. Booked a table in advance, which was advised as it was busy. There were vegan Christmas lunch options, which were gorgeous - two course meal (1/ Mushroom Wellington with all the trimmings + cranberry gravy & for dessert Apple and almond tart with ice cream. The service was great, as normal, and there was a lovely Christmas beer special. Another lovely experience had at...

Nice location and staff were friendly & welcoming. Unfortunately, the room was extremely cold and shivered most of the night. Radiator in bathroom was cold, single glazed window that didn’t close properly, so passing traffic below the window was noisy. A freezing cold draft coming in through large gap under the door, which we had to block with a towel and minimal bedding, despite it being mid February. Thankfully we had taken a thick fur blanket, which helped keep our dogs warm on the floor. The room was not very clean and there was black mould on the walls. Wish we’d read the reviews before booking! It is obvious many people have highlighted the same issues for quite some time but, the owners don’t appear to be making any effort to address them, in order to make their customer’s stay a nicer, more comfortable experience. Tea and coffee making facilities were a bonus but, were little comfort for the night we had. A little money spent improving the windows, heating and housekeeping, would make this...

I’m always looking for new places that have history and character, I’ve past this place many times and always thought one day soon….when I did I was like why not before! The place is fantastic, the staff 100% friendly and make you fell welcomed. I’m one of those individuals who looks for something different unique and standout from the rest. Black Dog is one of those places….I’ve been a few time and today, I went with the family and extended family for Sunday food and drinks with a party of 16 and they delivered - the food was absolutely amazing! I will definitely be back again soon šŸ™‚

Certainly value for money and a nice place inside too. It was really busy on the Friday lunchtime we went so the food took quite a while to arrive. My veggie burger was really good, only down side was the skinny fries were rock hard! Think that was just bad luck though as the next table had them and they looked good. 10/10 for the coffee which was surprisingly lovely. Good varied menu and enough veg choices to keep me happy.
