Will the Butt Inn, be the eventual Butt of all jokes? Well, in my experience, Yes! This used to be a fantastic little pub, that although we live in the village over we always used to pop into for a drink or a bite to eat whilst walking the dogs. Since the re-opening & change of management, we have tried to continue to pop in. Yes the decor is lovely & fresh faced, but the staff & food are seriously lacking. The first time I visited, you could quite literally squeeze the grease out of my ‘fish finger sandwich’, the second I walked into the bar & was told ‘ I cannot serve you!’, politely I replied with it is okay, I can wait. Which was met with an abrupt snap back ‘food orders were not being taken for at least 45 minutes’. Clearly observing that the staff member was stressed I discreetly left. Giving it one last chance my husband & I popped in for a treat, ordering two beers, we enquired about menus & were told in a similarly aggressive manner ‘that no orders were being taken in for an hour & they were out of menus.’ We were told someone would bring them out to us. No one did. To add insult to injury, the ale was VIAL! & the pipes had clearly not been cleaned properly. Drinking as much as I could without feeling sick & worried about the possible wrath from the staff member behind the counter! We dropped the remainder of our pints at the bar & went to The Hinds Head to enjoy one of the best meals in a public house we have ever had. We were always put off by the price of The Hinds Head, but given that The Butt Inn has become just another expensive pub, we might as well spend it in a lovely & welcoming establishment then always being met with a stern word & terrible food (when you can actually get it that is!!). Needless to say, stay away from this pub & travel just a few minutes longer to have an exceptional pint somewhere else. Hopefully in the not too distant future distant future it will run itself into the ground & arise from the ashes to form a place to...

This used to be our go to but hadn’t been for a while after our previous visit was disappointing but quite local & like to support local when we can so decided to give it another go. Unfortunately the lunch offer which enticed back had been rescinded via an updated Facebook post which we hadn’t seen - not ideal but we decided to stay anyway. Food was served quickly but we were the only people there at the time. Chose the garlic mushrooms on toast with poached egg but the egg was bordering hard boiled & the mushrooms didn’t have any garlic flavour. The other meal was just OK - the gammon was overcooked & a bit dry but the fried egg was at least runny. Fed it back to the staff & whilst very friendly & understanding of our concerns there was no attempt at service recovery. Due to time constraints we had to eat & go so couldn’t wait for things to be remade. One thing we have noticed over the course of the year of us being semi regular is that the portion sizes have definitely decreased e.g chicken schnitzel & only one piece of toast for the mushrooms seemed a bit small for £10. A shame but will be a while before...

Third visit to this lovely pub. The interior decor has been totally transformed and modernised (lovely parquet flooring).

Always a wonderful welcome. Service is excellent and staff are friendly and helpful. The varied menu offers fantastic value and portions are generous. The only problem is - what delicious meal to choose!

My Mum had the French onion soup and rarebit starter - which was a very generous portion! I enjoyed the steak and ale pie - proper pie with a top AND a bottom, lovely crispy pastry. Buttered seasonal vegetable and all served nice and not.

Partner had the Vietnamese curry, basmati rice, red chilli, pomegranate & fresh lime - lots of fresh ingredients and colour.

Lovely puds - love the value offered by the small puds with hot drink (ÂŁ5.50) and the coffee (cappuccino) had a lovely thick creamy froth - and again, nice and hot. All too often one has to down coffee because it's only luke warm - but that isn't the case here!

Keep up the great work folks - we will most certainly be back again! Your Chef clearly knows what he is doing in...

Wow Liz has whipped this place into shape... The pubs looking fantastic, immaculately clean throughout, the scented candles and background music make the whole pub very tranquil and very comfortable. This pub is a real credit to Liz and punch partnerships... An amazing Landlady and really beautiful building Wow ... If only it was nearer to home 😍 this place... One of my favourite venues !! The is a beautiful country pub with huge outdoor and indoor seating...(photos) Liz is very welcoming and has been busy putting her stamp on this place... Very clean and the attention to detail is clear to see. A really pleasant venue to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet on a hot summer day or cosy up inside in beautiful dĂ©cor when the cold weather is in.

We had passed this restaurant so many times in the past year visiting between Oxford and Basingstoke. Each time we said we must make a plan to go in. On the day we finally moved back to Basingstoke we finally stopped. And boy am I glad we did. The food was absolutely delicious. We chose items off the bar snacks and sharers menu. Good portions. The ladies serving us were helpful. The owner popped past to see how things were and we had a good chat. It’s wonderful to find a restaurant that has a personal touch. The big chains don’t give you this experience because they’re just pumping numbers through. There is also an outside area to eat. I highly recommend a stop here. We certainly will go back.
