Went on a visit to Hale village with a friend and stopped off at the Childe of Hale pub for a late lunch. From the outside the pub looks like a small country pub however on the inside this was not the case. The pub is labelled as a Greene King pub however does not provide the Greene King menu which most if not all other Greene King pubs offer. We asked for some menus at the bar and went to find a table to sit down. There was not alot of space between some of the tables so not very pushchair/wheelchair friendly. When we sat down to look at the menus these were not very well written and did not really offer information on allergens or dietary requirements. On looking at the menu the food choices were very limited with almost every dish containing meat. There were no available food options for vegans or those with a gluten intolerance. The menu also did not offer any simple small plates like a bowl of chips or jacket potatoes some of the standard small dishes on most pub menus. When asking at the bar if they served soya milk or any kind of plant based alternative for milk we were informed that the pub doesnt stock this. While I do understand that there may not be very many vegans or people with dairy intolerance who visit this pub some form of plant based milk alternative even in small cartons which would then open up at least a few drinks options for vegans or those with a dairy intolerance. I ordered the soup of the day as a starter which was chicken and mushroom this looked like it had come out of a tin and had chunks of chicken and mushroom added into it in order to create the impression that the soup had been freshly made. On tasting the soup it was lukewarm at best and extremely salty. The bread that came on the side of the soup was a piece of baguette which was actually a bit soft and not really what you would expect to recieve with a bowl of soup. I also ordered a hunters chicken baguette which came with chips and salad as a main meal. The chips were just warm and nothing special. The salad was completely covered in some form of dressing which did not look appetizing at all. The bread was again not as crusty as it really should have been. The cheese melted on the top was also very rubbery in texture which was really disappointing. It was also very disappointing to go into a pub and not be able to just enjoy a meal with a friend due to there being no vegan options available at all other than a packet of crisps. After finishing eating I went to use the bathroom facilities in the pub which did not have any hot water for hand washing which I really hope was not the case throughout the entire pub. I was also informed by my friend that the baby changing facilities were unclean to say the least. Would not go here again and definitely would...
Read moreNot a Gastropub! Lovely pub in a lovely location, sit in the sun and watch the planes fly overhead approaching Liverpool John Lennon Airport. We have visited this pub as a group of girls celebrating birthdays etc on many occasions and have always been pleased with the food on offer. Our latest visit didn't live up to previous experiences here. We arrived as a group of eight, we bought drinks and browsed the menu. I noticed a not so pleasant smell and quickly realised it was the placemats, they smelt so bad that we had to take them off the table as it was quite overpowering. We all ordered and the food arrived at our table altogether which was really well done as we could all eat together. A few of us ordered fish & chips, they said that the chips were undercooked but the fish was ok. My friend and I ordered the Gammon, again the chips were undercooked, the Gammon was extremely salty and the onion rings were also undercooked. Another friend ordered the sausage & mash, when it arrived it looked lovely. My friend tried the sausage and then asked me to try it, it tasted watery and really not very nice. She had a discreet word with the waitress who said she would replace the meal. My friend again tried the sausage and then asked another friend to try it, she couldn't eat the sausage as she had no doubt that the sausages didn't taste right. She spoke to the waitress and said she would just have the fish & chips as we had all eaten by this stage. The manageress did refund the money to my friend for her meal which was appreciated. The waitress that was working that day did an amazing job, well done! Sadly after our latest experience here we doubt that we...
Read moreLovely pub . Lovely grub!. Great staff. I would like to say how grateful I am. I had 'organised' a large group walk for the lighthouse trail and decided we'd have tea at Child of Hale pub afterwards. I say organised loosely as it grew quickly from 8 to 18 people from nice idea to let's just do it next Sunday with the more the merrier attitude. I realised, even though. Id not been here before that was his was likely to be problematic as it's not a huge place, and it's popular. I called on the Friday to see if I could reserve a table for 12...hoping the other s could book for themselves. Sure enough too many to accommodate at short notice. But I secured a table for 8. The other four secured a separate table but wasn't guaranteed to be seated in same area. Then another 4 friends secured a table and the last two also secured a table. So was very very pleased we all would get a meal after our walk. The walk ended up shorter with the rain and some just stayed in the pub for a drink instead until we got back. But to our grateful delight when we did. We were told all 18 of us where seated in the same area 😁 Was so happy as the point was bringing all our friends together. And though the walk didn't come off quite as planned , we got what we truly wanted, the association together which the staff made possible. I had a lovely roast chicken dinner at such a reasonable cost. Friends all said they enjoyed their food too!! We will definitely visit again with better organisation and more notice to the pub!! 🫣😁 Thankyou....
