A comfortable bed and breakfast pub in a small village in Herefordshire convenient for visiting many places of interest in the area eg Welsh castles, Hereford cathedral, Symonds Yat. I would ask readers to read the whole review to the end as there were many good things about the pub and a few not so good. The rooms are comfortable enough -the bathroom was gorgeous. Many hotels in Britain feel an over the bath shower fitting is adequate but the Green Man has a beautiful shower rooms complete with lovely toiletries, fluffy bath robes and towels. However our room was unbearably hot even with the windows open and fan on. Likewise the dining areas -we couldn't wait to leave the dining room because it was so hot, both after breakfast and dinner. The weather was particularly hot when we were staying, but British hotels will need to start thinking about air conditioning if the summers continue this way. Breakfast was tasty, hot and varied, the dinner menu was 'quirky" Pulled pork and Swiss cheese loaded chips with rump steak? Tasted ok but why? Chorizo dauphinoise potatoes with lamb? I'm afraid I didn't get it! There is a lovely garden with tables and lots of people eating outside because of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme running throughout August. However, the staff struggled to cope with the volume of walk in customers this produced. The Green Man was the only place open because of the coronavirus pandemic, but, unfortunately, they just weren't prepared for the numbers coming through the door. There were not enough people on duty, or they were very disorganised; not sure which, but it was very difficult to get served on occasion and we had to abandon the idea of dessert outside one evening where it was cooler than the dining room because we just couldn't get a dessert menu despite asking 2-3 times. Customers were sitting at uncleared tables and cleaning the tables themselves. The staff were pleasant and friendly enough but disorganised and clearly not communicating with each other. I felt that they should have been brave enough to introduce a booking only service or bring in more staff. Despite the above, I would book the Green Man again. I feel we didn't have the best experience and would go back to see if this was simply because of the situation at the time.

Regrettably, not one of our most successful anniversary evenings out. The hotel and pub itself is well appointed and our bedroom when we arrived was warm and clean. We arranged to have dinner at 7 o’clock and the menu was good and we chose to have two venison pies. Although very attractively presented the contents of the pies were virtually null. Not much Bambi in these. these. We enjoyed sitting in the bar and then retired to bed. No sooner had we got into bed but we were joined by a tribute band devoted to Tina Turner. We love Tina Turner but we didn’t actually want to have her in the room with us. Nobody had warned us that there was live music on and it was such a volume that it prevented a sleeping for a couple of hours. Given that it was such a very cold night -5, we woke at about 3 o’clock to find that the heating wasn’t working. We found that there was a bar fire in the cupboard and so we put that on and that helped a little. The bathroom, although quite modern and clean only featured a shower directly from above without any other kind of shower attachment. Unfortunately, the water that emerged from the shower was lukewarm, the toilet again had woken us in the night because it was continually refilling and one of the buttons that flushes the toilet was obviously broken and hadn’t been repaired. Breakfast next day put us directly next to somebody who we didn’t know there was no spacing allowed, and we asked to be moved into one of the other table areas. This was done, you could tell with a bit of reluctance. When our breakfast which we had booked the night before arrived, they were warmish but was obviously not freshly cooked and when I asked one of the front of house staff for some brown sauce for my breakfast, I was just pointed in the direction of another room to go and find it. It’s a very simple thing, try and delight your customers. If you just stepped through and brought it to me that would’ve been nice that would’ve saved the morning. I don’t like moaning about other businesses. Hospitality is a hard enough thing to do, but there are so many ways of making it better without any extra cost. Unfortunately we won’t be returning to the green man.

Worst hotel stay of my life. Paid £133 for a “double” room with breakfast at Greenman Fownhope and it was a complete rip-off. The room was dark, depressing, and felt like a jail cell with its tiny window. The “double bed” was just two singles shoved together at different heights, completely useless, with springs sticking into your back which can be seen in the picture. I asked to change the room when I first saw it, but the lady showing us the rooms was really rude and dismissive. She acted like we were bothering her and didn’t care about helping. then I talked to reception told me to pay more if I wanted something better. But They showed me another room, It looked lighter but the bed was even worse. Shocking that they even rent out rooms like these. At night it turned into a nightmare: over 100 mosquitoes! swarming the lamp. We had to leave the light on all the night to keep them in one spot, but the buzzing kept us awake all night anyway. No fridge in the room either, so no cold water in the middle of summer. If you turned on the fan It moved the mosquitoes around. We didn’t sleep at all. A disgrace of a hotel and a total waste of time and money. Avoid at all costs.

Stayed for two nights here Fri and sat night (28/29th).

Staff / service 10:10 lovely friendly nice warm welcome on arrival.

Food 10:10 we (me and Missus) had a meal here on the first night and it was lovely. I was very impressed. My Missus said her cabbage (with the sauce was a bit tasteless) but other than that we both really enjoyed it. Thank you very much for a lovely meal.

Location : 10/10 lovely location and nice lodge to stay over in. The town of Hereford is about 16 minutes away so easy access to the pubs, bars and eateries over that side. We recommend the Italian named Ascari they do a mean English breakfast there.

Cons….

Note these are very minor and I’m a very perspicacious person so being in the construction industry with my own business I highlight the following points, but bear in mind this is me probably being fussy and I highlight these critiques only as way of possible improvements moving forward. IF I had to point out flaws, which were difficult to find here.

I’ve stayed all over the world.

Whatever I say on the following is not major:

  1. The in house internet where we stayed in our particular suite was very very poor.

It’s in and out all the time. I carry with me for business a state of the art 5g WI-FI box but this even this struggled immensely.

If you are a working professional you will struggle to get a wifi signal on your phone or laptop. To be fair this could have been just our room.

  1. The hot water from the bathroom tap wasn’t working at all. I did report this to staff who were made aware so I presume this will be fixed later. Really these things should be checked before guest arrival.

  2. The general condition of the place is getting a little worn down, nothing massively to write home about but simple things like facias on toilet falling off & some general bits and bobs.

Guests shouldn't really be refitting bedroom furnishings. It was the middle of the night so.

The shower is one of those overlarge showers with a huge gap in the screen. When you run the shower water gets all over the floor and the toilet seat. Its a bit of a minor but more a design flaw & not the inn's fault.

These are simple things that can be fixed easily (sliding door etc).

  1. I made a note on my booking that I requested a bath on my room upgrade - would have paid for extra or otherwise - and this was not honoured we had no bath and the room was very small - albeit nicely decorated and very cosy and warm so no massive complaints there.

In the Green-man’s defence, we paid a discounted overall price for the two nights at less than £150.00 all in so I this could be overlooked but if had paid £200 for the two nights on the booking as standard I would expect warm running water from the taps as a minimum.

We DID enjoy our stay sorry to sound harsh.

The shower is amazing. Power shower (rainfall type) pumping lots of clean hot water 10/10.

The bed is comfy but the pillows leave something to be desired.

I had a good nights sleep for the price paid.

The chair looks like it’s been beaten into the wall (into oblivion) no clues here as to why this has happened 😜 so some minor re-decoration wouldn’t go amiss.

Other than that I would fully recommend the Green-man especially for the price we paid for our room. It was easily worth the £145 for two nights if you can stomach the lack of internet.

The tv works well and is a large LG flatscreen and is fairly modern and up to date no complaints there.

Good stuff.

Plenty of parking and a nice seating area / garden to sit in when the weather is a bit warmer. It is a very pleasant old inn experience.

The inn exterior itself is lovely, a well kept lovely piece of 500+ years old history, a fine example.

Overall I have enjoyed my stay at the Greenman fawnhope lodge and I would stay again and recommend to others if you see the discounted price of less than £150.00 for two nights.

It is truly a steal at that price.

Just be warned, younger people / any working professionals at the time of writing this, a lack of an internet signal is very poor & it will annoy...

We had issue after issue when we stayed at The Greenman. In chronological order:||A week or two before arriving, I tried contacting them by telephone to add dinner to our booking. I got through to an answering service. Over the following days, I tried several times each day, all with the same result. I left voice messages, but received no response. In total, I tried to reach them by phone 15-20 times, all with no result. By then it was already pretty clear that something was seriously amiss there. ||We were on a walking holiday, and on the afternoon of our arrival I was sweaty and much in need of a shower. However, there was no hot water! Staff put the water heater on boost, and in the event I had to wait about 20 minutes to take my shower.||In the meantime, I thought I’d make use of the time by having a shave. However, the sink plug was ineffective and the sink retained no water. ||When I was eventually able to take my shower, the water backed up in the shower tray to the point that it started to leak over the floor, this due to a partially blocked drain.||Having taken my shower and dressed, I needed to catch up with my emails. However, there was no wifi signal in our room (Room 14). Or, to the extent that there may have been, the wifi was so slow as to be completely unusable. ||Dinner that evening was mercifully good. However, on returning to our room, we were shocked by loud stomping noises coming from the room above. In fact, the guests in that room were using it properly - the noise was due to the fact that their floor / our ceiling is so lightweight and flimsy that every noise and footstep could be heard at full volume. ||We delayed going to bed until the guests upstairs had themselves gone to bed. There would have been no point in turning in earlier - it would’ve been impossible to sleep. ||Upon eventually going to bed and turning out the lights, we realised that the room was lit by a low green light. The reason? There’s a permanently-on illuminated fire escape sign on the bedroom side of the door!||We finally managed to get to sleep against all the odds. However, it was a broken night’s sleep because we were overheating all night thanks to there being a winter weight duvet on the bed - totally inappropriate for the season we were in. For security reasons, we were also unable to have the window open overnight - we were in a ground floor room, yet anyone could have entered the room via the window.||We were only staying the one night, and left the next morning to continue our walking holiday. Prior to checking out, we went to the reception to collect the packed lunch that we’d ordered the previous evening. We were told that the kitchen had no record of a packed lunch having been ordered - this despite the fact that the person with whom we’d placed our order the previous evening had made a point of writing a note for the kitchen whilst we were standing beside him. Being that we were continuing our walk on a Sunday morning and nowhere else was open, we had to do without lunch.||Bottom line - the staff were friendly and pleasant, and the dinner was good. Every other aspect of our stay was a shocker. On checking out, I told the person on the desk that I’d be lodging this complaint. He kindly deducted the cost of our dinner from the bill.
