This used to be a great garden centre before Hilliers took over. The cafe/restaurant used to be very nicely laid out, customer friendly, and very reasonably priced for a really good variety of food and snacks. We went in for the first time since the takeover just two weeks ago. We'd had a very long drive from Birmingham so headed straight for the cafe. The first impression was that it appeared very regimented with virtually no character or atmosphere. We joined the queue at 3.20pm. There was one person being served in front of us. The menu being displayed (illuminated panel on the wall) had a reasonable selection of sandwiches etc.. The girl at the till was still serving the only customer in front. To say that she was slow would be a gross understatement. Eventually we got to the till and ordered drinks and a couple of sandwiches - only to be told that the kitchen closed at 3.30pm! I explained that we'd been in the queue since 3.20pm and it had taken over 10 minutes to just serve the one person in front - we just wanted a couple of sandwiches!!! A male member of the cafe staff then came over and said the kitchen is definitely now closed and the only food available was cake or tarts. The price range: £3.99 for a slice of cake, £3.99 for a small slice of bread pudding, £3.99, for a Bakewell Tart, and (you've guessed it) £3.99 for a scone. Everything on offer was £4.00 all but 1p.!!! Bearing in mind the above and that both staff appeared to have a "couldn;t care less" attitude (both were probably only 18 to 20 years old with no real experience of dealing with the public) - my promise is: Hillier Garden Centres??? Never again - anywhere...
Read moreHave been twice in the last couple of weeks. Once on a Saturday afternoon about 2pm. Lunch must have been busy as there were lots of table not cleared....... and in some cases over an hour they were still not cleared.
It's new so hopefully it will improve.
The inside has been totally refurbished to a high standard, but it's rather dark and gloomy in the cafe even on a nice day. Couple of sky light windows might help this.
Went outside today still has scaffolding poles so not finished yet...... but I hope they place some planting to soften the view and make it feel you are in a garden centre as it's arranged in a courtyard setting, all you can see are4 outside garden rooms on sale.
The plant centre itself is excellent. Great range of plants all in top condition. Loved the boards clearly identifying where the plants will be suitable in your garden. Simple but effective.
Good range of other shops within the complex and extensive free parking.
Well worth a visit, and hopefully minor issues sorted...
Read moreWe have just visited your garden centre. We arrived at the cafe at around 2pm. On arriving we thought oh good not many people in the queue. We orded a sandwich and a baguette. Plus 2 cold drinks. Went to our table!!!!. I looked at the glasses. They where both covered in awful water marks. Not nice. I suggest some one wipes them as they come out of the dish washer. A much better look don't you think. Also we waited nearly 25 minuets for the above meal. Which the ordered baguette came as a panini which was very dry. The ladies on the next table said the scones were a little over done and dry. Plus our other friend's on another table said the same about there scones. I also watched this person clearing tables very slowly or not. There was a table dirty all the while we were there. About 1 and a half hrs maybe longer. You have spent such a lot of money on your place l suggest you get it sorted out before it gets a really bad name. Its not as if you are round the...
