Just had such a sad experience at this pub. Booked for my birthday, family came a long way to join and left still hungry. We were the first table to be seated. We went for the 3 course festive menu. 2 hours later we had only had starters. No one had come back to offer more drinks, explain the delay, or apologise for the wait. Staff passed our table obviously avoiding glancing our way. After repeated complaints, the manager explained they were understaffed in the kitchen (not sure that's an excuse for poor front of house service?) Our mains took another 15 minutes and when they arrived all the steaks were horribly overcooked and the other meals dry and rubbery. We asked for 2/4 steaks to be replaced, after waiting another 15 minutes we decided to call it quits. Initially the manager offered 30% off. Given 2 people had had no main, we all missed out on desert, the starters were cold and the children's meals were also wrong, I didn't feel that was enough. Eventually, she agreed to take the undelivered/inedible meals off the bill altogether. The more I reflect, the more I am surprised at the audacity to charge for anything other than the drinks. This really is the worst experience I've ever had at a pub. That is made even worse by the fact my family have had to go home disappointed and hungry and I am left having to have some toast for my...
Read moreWe came here for a friends Birthday and pre-booked for 2:30pm to enjoy the "Bottomless Bubbles" as advertised on their website stated to begin resume from the 5th of January 2018.
We arrived prior to our booking, no problem. We're early we'll buy a drink at the bar. 2:30 arrived. "Sorry the previous guests are still at your table can you wait for 5 minutes:" 3pm. "Sorry the guests are still at your table can you wait another 5 minutes.." 3:15pm we are moved to our table, 45 minutes after our booking was scheduled. We sit down and are presented with the standard lunch menu with the specials.
We mentioned that we pre-booked for the "Bottomless Bubbles" menu. The manager comes over and says this isn't valid and that it has stopped and won't start again for quite some time, Ok but your website states otherwise and as we start to need to use the toilet it's advertised there as well. Clearly the manager has no idea what on-going promotions are in his restaurant.
The food was ok quite good really for the price that we paid (aside from the home made cookie and ice cream. - Looked like the cookie you'd get from tescos), but the service was terrible. The waitress for the day was quite rude, blunt and slow...
Read moreI was in Cookham for the first time in 30 years for my father's memorial service. In the 80s and 90s The Kings Arms was our family's favourite restaurant and we had lunch there most weekends. In those days it was a Beefeater. I was very impressed by the sympathetic, beautiful interior decor. I was particularly amused to find the Ladies' lavatories in exactly the same place! They were significant to me for two reasons: first because they were the first toilets I had to be brave enough to go to on my own as a five year old dining with my newly divorced Father and brother (so unable to use the Gentlemen's lavatories) and second because I used to hide in them when my Father gave the staff feedback on how they could improve (frequently highlighting the fierce competition between Beefeater and Berni in those days). It was the perfect venue for my cousin's family and my family to relax after the service. We were very grateful to be able to eat a cooked meal at 3:30 before a long drive back to Devon. The menu was broad enough to cater for all ages in our party (of 8). The food was delicious. The staff were delightful. If were lived closer we would be back regularly. Thank...
