We went to Oscars at Abbey House Hotel for a lunch celebration with a friend. The place is absolutely stunning — elegant but still really welcoming. We don’t usually go to posh restaurants (always feel a bit out of place, tbh), but Oscars was lovely. The staff were warm and friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed, which helped us feel at ease straight away — especially with the kids and a group of mates in tow. What me and my partner had: Starters: Pork Belly Bits with Bramley Apple Compote – The pork belly itself was a bit mild in flavour, but the apple compote really lifted it and added a nice contrast. Goat’s Cheese Thyme Tart – My partner really enjoyed this one. He said it was creamy, well-balanced, and went down a treat. Mains: Slow-Cooked Cumbrian Lamb Shepherd’s Pie – I absolutely loved this! First time trying lamb in a shepherd’s pie and it was lush. Proper comfort food — I’d 100% order it again. Linguine with Prawns & Pan-Fried Seabass – He found it light and satisfying with a lovely white wine and lemon cream sauce. The portion was massive for him, but fair play — he still polished it off. 😄 Desserts: Sticky Toffee Pudding – Another winner for me. I’ve only recently gotten into sticky toffee puds as I am not a dessert person but, and this one was spot on not too sweet! Classic Tiramisu – Smooth and not too sweet, with just the right hit of coffee and chocolate. He was well happy with it. Service: The staff were brilliant. Really kind and patient, and never made us feel awkward, even with toddlers running about. They gave the kids some colouring pencils and paper to keep them busy, plus a kids’ menu which helped loads. We don’t tend to eat at places like this often — usually feels a bit fancy for us — but this was honestly such a...
Read moreWe haven't been to this restaurant for about 18 months. Glad to say it seems to have changed hands for the better. We booked our table but turned up 30 mins early for a drink we were offered either a table I'm the bar or in the restaurant. We opted for the bar. The addition of some real ales was a nice surprise since we last visited. The Wainwrights is achreat pint of ale. All the staff were very helpful and courteous, with prompt service ordering drinks and food. The food arrived quickly and we were not disappointed my wife ordered beetroot panacota, I ordered duck pate both were absolutely beautifully presented , served with bread, salad, and pickled red onions, absolutely gorgeous. We both ordered steaks my wife's well done, mine medium. Both came perfectly cooked accompanied by mushroom, tomatoes, salad and triple cooked chips all perfect. The Malbec wine to go with the steak was perfect well worth the cost. I will definitely start visiting the restaurant regularly again. Keep up the...
Read moreCould do a lot better! The food was well presented but the quality of cooking left a lot to be desired. Our table (of four) ordered the slow cooked leg of lamb: what is the traditional sauce served with lamb, that's right, its mint. Main meals arrived but no mint sauce, asked for the sauce and some extra gravy, took 12 minutes to arrive. Ideally would have been on the table before the meal arrived. Roast potatoes were tough skinned but fluffy inside, sharper knives needed! The lamb was fatty but ok, nothing outstanding. Barrow's premier hotel? I don't think so on this performance and price, hopefully it's just a one-off blip. It will be a long time before...
