I visited Rachel's Walnut Cottage Tea Rooms for the first time today while out cycling around the Yorkshire Wolds. On entering the Tea Rooms I was met with a friendly "hello" from a lady with a lovely warm smile. If I met someone who had never been to an English Tea Rooms before and I had to describe one to them I would use Rachel's place as a mental draft! It is the quintessential example of how a Tea Rooms should be (IMHO). Quaint but not quirky, light & airy, very clean, the seating and tables arranged perfectly. A delicious selection of home made scones, cakes, biscuits, tarts etc. on display, tea served in china tea pots and china tea cups and table service. I chose a cream team which was absolutely delicious so much so I just had to try one of Rachel's Date & Walnut scones too! The place seemed to be popular with cyclists and non cyclists alike, while I was sat enjoying my cream tea, five other separate groups arrived. I would've liked to stay longer to discuss the secrets of creating the perfect scone with Rachel but unfortunately she was very busy and I had some riding to do. I would recommend Rachel's Walnut Cottage Tea Rooms to anyone and everyone who is in the area. You will not be disappointed. I will most definitely be visiting again on my next excursion...
Read moreTotally delightful! Rachel is lovely - warm, friendly, welcoming, a busy and energetic little bee. Super little tearooms well worth sniffing out if you are ever in the Yorkshire Wolds. Huggate village is the highest village on the Wolds at 550ft above sea level. If you have been walking or cycling and are in need of refreshments then this little establishment fits the bill. Small parking area, has outdoor seating, proffers plenty of literature on the Yorkshire Wolds, good selection of hot and cold drinks, great big, cosy woodburner, clean premises. Wonderful selection of homemade cakes, I would have sampled more if there was a take out service, but that unfortunately is no longer available. The coffee and walnut cake was irresistible but I also am a sucker for ginger cake and I was keen to try this homemade one too. (Snort, snort!) Made fresh every day with locally sourced ingredients and flour from the local mill, these cakes were fluffy and light as a feather. Neither stodgy nor sticky, way too more-ish! I shall have to return to try the yummy looking scones. Oh that will be a hardship then, ha ha. If you are looking for a cake stop then this is most definitely not one to miss. Super all round....
Read moreWhat a lovely experience we had in this traditional tea room. There was a warm and friendly welcome, and the cake display, gosh it was a feast for the eyes. The owner was really allergy aware and knew the ingredients of everything. Everything, is homemade, even the beautifully soft and light bread rolls which is so unusual. The smooth, rich, warming bowl of carrot and coriander soup felt wicked and healthy at the same time. We had a big selection of treats afterwards, a combination of greed and indecision. The scones were light, fresh and full of flavour. The coffee and walnut cake was traditional, rich, and moist with the perfect amount of icing. The generous portion of millionaires slice had a delicious thick toffee layer that wasn't overly sweet with buttery shortbread, and of course we tried the tiffin which had a very slightly chewy bite to it, richly chocolatey with a flake chocolate finger on the top. We were lucky enough to sit outside in the glorious sunshine where the owner, Rachel, and her husband Ken provided friendly and attentive service. Our visit here was such a lovely experience, I'd highly...
