I hadn't been to this pub in a while but I was aware that it had changed hands within the last year so thought I would try it. I got there at about 5.45pm on a Friday afternoon and the bar was just beginning to fill up. A member of staff told me that because of a broken dishwasher I could only have one pint glass for my beer and any subsequent ones would be in plastic beakers. Faintly ludicrous but I thought I would just ask for my glass to be refilled for subsequent drinks. I ordered a pint of bitter and a medium glass of white Pinot Grigio and was charged £9.10. My wife ordered food for us, gammon, egg and chips for me, street food Cambodian curry with an extra £2 addition of chicken for her.
We had to wait about half an hour for our food to arrive and during that time I went to get more drinks. The staff wouldn't refill my glass citing 'Health & Safety' and they wouldn't wash it out so I and several other customers had to stand at the bar attempting to pour beer from flimsy plastic beakers into our glasses. I also ordered a further glass of wine and this time was asked for £9.75. When I queried this I was told I must have been undercharged on the previous occasion. Seeing as the staff use a touchscreen to place orders I don't know how that can be.
Our food eventually arrived and after a couple of mouthfuls my wife said her curry was only lukewarm and had no chicken in it. She returned it and to be fair a staff member came to our table, apologised and said she would get a refund for her in addition to providing another meal. She went away but never returned with a refund. After another 30 minutes wait my wife's meal finally arrived, this time hot and with chicken.
During our wait we were entertained by three young men at an adjacent table competing with each other to see who could loudly drop the most F-bombs during a conversation.
Having finally finished with the food we decided it was time to leave and I stopped at the bar and asked the staff member for my refund. She walked over to the landlord who was in the process of conducting a meat raffle, had a brief conversation with him, returned and said if I waited two minutes he would give me the refund. Fifteen minutes later I was still waiting and bored so we decided to leave without it.
It's a shame really as the Seven Stars should be a good pub but it misses being so. There are other, better pubs in the area and in future that's where I'll be taking...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeing only 37 of them, it is not the most common name for a pub. The sign of the Seven Stars in the star cluster of the Pleiades was considered a bunch of grapes in a Dionysian/Bacchic world view, therefore a suitable tavern sign.
Some parts of this pub are very historic, as indicated by the bricked up window and heavily foot-worn doorstep.
The window tax was introduced in 1696. A tax based on the number of windows in a building. Many windows were bricked up in those days to mitigate this levy.
Very much 'the village pub' this reviewer has seen many administrations (not all of them successful) come and go in the years he has been a patron, fortunately the current tenants are more focused on customer satisfaction and this is apparent.
Accommodation, drink, and provender are provided at above average norms. On the Cask Marque Ale Trail and the Sunday Roast is a Reservation Recommended Event.
Two, well found en-suite bedrooms, constantly in demand booking well in advance is advised.
Not found all that frequently is the Petanque piste. Members of this game meet regularly.
The car park is clearly marked but must be approached with care. It's within the village traffic bottle neck
A huge bedouin style tent covers half the beer garden, plenty of cover for those who have Al fresco...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWednesday 30th 1pm We (4 adults, 1 baby) arrived for lunch on a spur of the moment meal out. The atmosphere was lovely upon entering and we were greeted by a lovely host (the dog who showed us inside). Directed round to a snug room was perfect for our family and allowed for our baby to go down for a nap and not be disturbed. We ordered starters which were a great start for our meals, a couple of cocktails, and then a steak, burger, wrap and chicken feast.
The rump steak was cooked to perfection, a beautiful pink medium! Cheese and bacon burger was delicious. The chicken feast had plenty of choice and was very good amount of food for the price. The wrap and drink lunch deal was very good for the price.
Only one person was working the bar and running food but never made us feel forgotten or ignored. Food was out in a timely manner and was still hot and well presented.
Stuck around afterwards with comfortable space to feed the baby and enjoy the pool table! Thank you all very much for having us we are already planning...
