We came on Sunday as a birthday treat for my husbands 60th. My daughter arrived first and they were shown to the table and told that there was no beef or pork left and also no fish or scampi! After 25 minutes my daughter had to go and ask for someone to take our drinks order. We asked again what was available on the menu and were told that there were now 4 roast beef’s and 5 pies left. The waitress said we had come at a bad time as you often run out of food on a Sunday afternoon! It’s a shame nobody told me that when I called to ask if you did GF roasts. We chose from what was left on the menu. 4 of us opting for Steak & 6X pie, 3 with chips and 1 with mash. My daughter & daughter in law opted for a roast and my 2 grandsons had a roast and fish & chips. The pies I can’t fault, they were piping hot and very tasty. Unfortunately the chips were only warm and everyone’s vegetables and gravy were cold. I asked for some extra gravy in the hope of warming my veg up but that too was cold. The gammon roast was all cold. A telling point was that my 1 year old grandson could eat his dinner as soon as it was placed in front of him. There was no need to let it cool. My husband had opted for mash and was served a toddler sized portion. I asked if he could have some more and was told that you had run out of mash! Maybe someone could have said that and offered him an alternative? They did bring him a bowl of warm chips after we asked. My son asked for a pint of Guinness and was told that there was a problem with the tap and Guinness was not an option. A good while after we had finished our meal my daughter again had to go and ask someone to clear our table. As I had brought a cake we opted for teas & coffees rather than desserts. My teapot had a broken spout which I pointed out as I didn’t want it to go everywhere. The waitress took it away and obviously poured it into another pot because by the time I poured it out, it was Luke warm! I didn’t complain at the time as I didn’t want to make a fuss and ruin the experience for my husband completely. When we asked for the bill, the card machine was faulty and the waiter had to go and get another one! All in all, it was an extremely disappointing experience and I found myself having to apologise to my husband as what should have been a treat, was frankly very...
Read moreLovely countryside pub situated on the kennet and Avon canal. We were a table of 5 with a reservation and attended slightly earlier than our allotted time, this was not an issue as we were able to take our table immediately. As it was a Sunday we were only able to order from that days menu. The choices available were vast but yet as a Sunday roast is the norm, the choices were an adequate range. The starters ordered arrived in good time and served with a smile and courteous manner from the waiting staff. The ham hock was absolutely delicious, as to were the other dishes, the only let down was no halloumi fries. As you would expect a sufficient amount of time was afforded between starter and main, a team member even came to our table to inform us it was being prepared presently. Each main and side was presented by the staff with the same manner as the starters. Each dish was of pure quality and is testament to an attentive chef team. Each dish our party had was met with the English appreciation tone of yum and wow this taste amazing. Overall this is a fantastic pub which clearly has a top team, from the kitchen to the front of house. Our sincere compliments and gratitude to the chef team on the day, Sunday 5th November, for making such wonderful dishes and to the staff that attended our table. We will most definitely return, for the food and the atmosphere....
Read moreWe came to the barge inn, having passed it on many occasions on our narrowboat and thought we would treat ourselves to a meal out there as it looked so nice. The pub is lovely looking and the staff were very friendly however I cannot say the same positive things for the food I’m afraid. We ordered the scallops and mussels for starter. The scallop dish was very bland and the scallops were tiny. The mussel dish was better but it was served with quite stale white bread rather than fresh sourdough as stated on the menu. For mains we ordered the chicken supreme and the truffle tagliatelle. My partner quite enjoyed his pasta dish however the chicken supreme was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a creamy chicken supreme served with the beans but instead it was a very dry piece of chicken on top of an extremely salty bean base. I couldn’t finish eating it as it was so salty. The cassoulet also didn’t have the bacon & Toulouse sausage which was mentioned on the menu. Literally just the salty beans. I did feed this back to our waiter who removed that dish from the bill. Overall your staff are very welcoming and we were very happy with our customer service but unfortunately the food did not live up to our expectations especially at the high price points they sit at. We will visit again for drinks but we would never eat there again I’m...
