Less than 4 hours sleep due to grumpy radiator that started churning out loud vibrating noises starting at 11pm until 6am the following morning, every 20/30 mins. Room reviewed: Bishops Initially we thought this loud noise was coming from outside, so we opened the window, but then realised it was the radiator. It sounded like an old rusty tap that hadn’t been used for centuries, which had then been opened and was groaning and struggling to let the water out. To the touch, you could feel the vibrations running through the radiator panel. The result: we’d drift off to sleep, only to be woken minutes later by the loud sounds, repeatedly. I had earplugs, but the sound still penetrated right through it. Added to this, the glass entry/exit door for guests/deliveries, needs to be signed asking users/other guests “to respect guests by being quiet”. The continual slamming of this door (vibrates all the way up the adjoining staircase walls behind the bed) till late at night/starting again a 5am. This further added to the disruption of our nights rest too. As a result, we faced meetings with a VERY sleep deprived for the day ahead of us. Not what we expected, given the other reviews. Both my husband and I let staff know before we left (we left 2hrs apart). The two ladies I spoke to acknowledged my complaint, but offered no more than “we will let our plumber know”. In an economy where money is tight due to high energy/food bills, this overnight stay was an absolute luxury. Our dinner £70 was great, but £142 (excl breakfast) for a bad > 4hrs sleep and feeling absolutely ragged the next day, was not money well spent. Sadly, we both felt staff were not appreciative of our struggle and no discount was offered. We totally dislike leaving bad reviews, but it needs to be said that unfortunately due to this bad experience, we will not return out of fear of repeating it.

We had a really poor experience with the food. My wife ordered a steak, advertised as rump steak with chips, mushrooms and watercress. My wife explained she was dairy intolerant and could she have a salad instead of the chips. The plate of food in the photo arrived, a steak with what can only be described as a side salad, no mushrooms, apparently it’s beyond the wit of the kitchen to cook them in oil. And for a steak (which was poorly cooked) and a small side salad they were seeking to charge £29.50. The kitchen offered no alternatives nor decent replacements, the attempt at a salad was laughable. The test of a good kitchen is the ability to adapt and offer sound alternatives to keep their customers happy but clearly not in this case. It’s indicative of a really don’t care attitude by the kitchen. It’s apparently ok to bang out menu items parrot fashion but they simply can’t/or won’t adapt. I’d avoid and go somewhere else where they care.

Ancient rural country pub! Established in 1550 this village boozer/eatery is charming and cozy. Plenty of free parking (validated inside the pub), loads of outside seating at the front and the rear, good selection of drinks and a varied and interesting food menu make this an ideal spot for a family meal. Dog friendly too. Fish and chips was excellent, as was the courgette and broad bean arancini. The menu also informs of a dessert which is sold for charitable proceeds, and the fact that the brewery provides beer waste product to a local farm for cow feed, which then provides milk for the cheese used back at the pub. Nice little touches that show a consideration for social welfare, and sustainability! Inside seemed warm and welcoming, though we sat outside and only popped in and out to order at the bar. Was moderately busy for a midweek lunch, which is always a good sign of a quality establishment. Highly recommended!

See below for feedback. I tried to give the hotel a chance to comment but it is symptomatic of their unprofessional approach that they haven't even bothered to reply.||In short, nice enough place and rooms but food was expensive and pretty poor, running out of breakfast items 2 days on the bounce is amateurish and just under £13.00 for a Campari and lemonade is taking the piss.||Not replying to emails pretty much expected. |||||| We stayed with you from Sunday through to Tuesday morning and wanted to feedback before posting a review.||||Firstly, the rooms were excellent and the venue as a whole was lovely and we enjoyed our stay.||||There were few things that clouded our experience however.||||Sunday lunch.||Whilst the service was a bit random, and the tapas and cheese board a bit disappointing for the price, the fish and chips were excellent. The roast beef was a disaster: the roasts were soggy, the suede was more like soup but the beef itself was a small strip of overcooked, fatty scrag end. I got the feeling that this was an end of service, microwaved effort. I pointed this out to the waitress and asked her to speak to the chef about it. No response was coming over the next 10 minutes nor even when I asked her what they had said. We were surprised since on a review I could see a similar complaint had been dealt with promptly and professionally. This was most certainly not acceptable.|| As a result of this experience and also many things not available from the menu, we didn’t eat with you again. This is disappointing as we chose to stay there with a view to eating there and not driving.||||Breakfasts||Firstly, can I say that the young lady was excellent on all occasions. However, she had to embarrassingly list a line of things that were not available - most embarrassingly no beans and then the next day, no beans or sausages for the full English. Surely, this could have ben easily remedied. I know you are a chain etc but this just seemed daft.||||||Bar prices||I can see this is a common complaint. I have some sympathy for higher prices on well kept craft ales that you serve, but I am at a loss as to how you can justify almost £13.00 for a Campari and lemonade. Even I can buy a bottle 70cl of Campari for less than £18.00. Therefore 50ml would cost circa £1.30. Average prices I know range between £4 to. £8 for a Campari and lemonade but I am afraid I cannot see how you get to your prices. Of course, you can change what you like but obviously not without attracting comment, I just wondered if you could explain how you think this is reasonable. ||||Internet||As I am sure you are aware, the internet in certainly our room is very poor so the Smart TV functions do not work.||||We did try and raise all these issues at the point of checkout when we saw the bill and the young breakfast lady was very polite but there was clearly no manager with whom to address these matters. We would like to give you the opportunity to do so now.||||Many thanks and look forward to hearing...

We've started to become a fan of Butcombe pub/rooms as this is the second venue we have visited & stayed in, the last one was 3 weeks ago at the Crab & Boar (worth a visit as well) You can never measure each one against each other as it is not like comparing 'Apples to Apples' every venue is different, in staff, decor, building, location, even some of the food so each time you visit you will experience a different outcome. We had a 4 night stay booked in a Signature Plus room 14. The room is actually in the house next door which is connected to the main building but to be honest you would not know this from the inside (I didn't it took me 4 days to realise!!). The room is designed to give the impression that it is part of the old pub, king size bed comfortable, a small wardrobes with hangers, large TV, the bathroom is small and you might bang your head on the towel rail when you sit on the loo!! cubicle shower just big enough for a large chap like me. The room over looks the carpark and road, but the road is very quite during the day & night. Checked in at 3pm room was not ready so had a drink in the bar 20 minutes later good to go. Ate in at the pub on the first night food was enjoyable, drinks they have a good choice. Breakfast there is a good choice, you need to ask for pastries & orange juice as these are not put out, coffees teas etc all available. Ate out on the second night, third night we decided to eat at the pub had the Bar BQ which I saw on someone else's plate and look good and large the wife had the Fish & Chips. Fish and chips were good and the bar B Q I was a bit underwhelmed, 2 sausages, 2 ribs yes 2 with a bit of meat in between them!! and a piece of brisket , with slaw, corn on the cob and chips what was there tasted good but £25 not worth the money, the couple who previously had the same saw mine and said they hade been given more meat! I did mention this to the staff and was told that this was what was on the other plates, I think not, If I had gone somewhere and had a mixed grill for say £20 I certainly would have got better value for money. On the 4th evening again we ate out. It is a great location if you want to get out during the day Cardiff 50 mins, Cheddar 50 mins, Swindon 45 mins, Gloucester 50 mins (all times are approx. & you might be subject to delay :) ). Generally the staff were friendly but we have experienced chattier staff. One other beef is the dreaded service charge, which we had on the first night (not the third night!!) I know that it seems to be coming the norm in the restaurant industry now but if you are staying at the pub why should they charge you this surely as a resident it should be waived. We never noticed it until we paid our bill in full at the end of our stay so too late to query it but perhaps we never saw the small print!! Enjoyed the stay now on to another Butcombe in a few weeks but do...
