Out of 4 orders, one steak was all grisle and well done, it should have been medium. I swapped with my partner as he got my steak. My steak was slightly overdone but still nice. The steak that was all grisle was replaced but everyone else had finished by the time it came, not good. The chips were outstanding which is why I've put 2 stars. The worst was the desserts. We came back here as in December we had the best ever Sticky toffee pudding so we travelled quite far to come back for it as we don't live local. It was that good. This time the desserts were totally different. Sticky toffee pudding was a tasteless square bit of stodgy cake with no taste of toffee at all. I couldn't even eat it all, reminded me of school desserts. The lemon drizzle cake was the same - square, stodgy cake with no taste. £5.25 for each dessert and I would have been much happier with a box of Mr Kipling French Fancies for £1. This place went from the best to the worst desserts in the space of 3 months. I can't understand it unless it has new owners or a different chef. Such a shame as we won't be back. I'd travel for the Causey Inn down the road but this is no longer worth it. Also I was not impressed by the picture on the wall in the main entrance if you enter from the steep car park from the main road. The frame is smashed with glass sticking up in the frame. Very poor first impression and a health and safety hazard if...
Read moreWhat a change! my husband and I decided to try our Sunday lunch at the Causey yesterday, we got a lovely surprise we were greeted by Carl the barman and a taste of real ale ( name ending in Tommy). Booked our table in advance, for a change we were early. We were shown to a lovely table by the open fire and a beautiful view overlooking the Tanfield Railway and open fields. Right on queue a beautiful old steam train drove by in full steam!! that was all before we had lunch. Our lunch, we began with Duck Pate and Plum sauce, we both decided on Roast Beef (after asking fellow diners what they thought of the meal) we were not disappointed we left out the pudding no room left, the nicest Pub Sunday Lunch ever, clean plates were taken away, we noted we were not the only diners who enjoyed the food, good company from friendly Diners and excellent very smart staff. Such a tonic to have very good hot tasty food served by staff who make an effort to make you feel at home, where a smile and nothing is too much to do for you. The new manager, the changes she has made in a short time, are on display for all to enjoy in the clean warm old world of a lovely country pub with old friends, local people and visitors from far and wide. A well deserved Five star from us we will be going back hope you visit and enjoy your...
