Well as you can see by the picture, the Cross Hands Hotel wish me to leave a review, so to that end, you have got exactly what you have asked for. Booked a table online, for a special meal for just the two of us, my Wife and myself. Arrived on time was greeted by a polite barman, walked to the restaurant and was shown to the table. Here ends the good bit! I ordered the roast with mushroom and ale pie, and my Wife ordered the roast with turkey. Not too long a wait, about what time you would normally expect, the meals arrived. As you can see at first glance all looked relatively good. I slid my plate towards me and remarked "Cold plates" which in itself is unusual in most restaurants I go in, then came the eating. Cold Carrots and Brockley, when I mean cold I mean not even warm. The Cauliflower cheese was barely warm, which you would of expected to of been cooked in a hot oven? My mushroom pie, no problem pipping hot. The yorkshire pudding was just warm as was the gravy. This meal matched my Wifes who also remarked how cold everything was. The waitress did ask if all was OK with our meals, we told her the vegetables were all cold. She did remark sorry about that and some excuse about the pot washer, what that had to do with the heat of my vegetables I just do not know. Telling us that does not make my meal that I've just left any better. My Wife asked if I wanted a desert to cover the disaster that we sent back left on the plates, Personally I would of walked then, but it was a special occasion so I thought it cannot get any worse! My Wife ordered the cheesecake and myself apple crumble and custard. 12 minutes later a waitress brought the cheesecake to the table for my Wife and placed a spoon in front of me for my desert which I thought was about to appear. As my Wifes desert had ice-cream with it, she waited 5 minutes and I asked her to go ahead and eat it as it was now melting away, which she did. Some time after she finished about 15 minutes, I still had no desert. My Wife went to the toilet and remarked to a waitress on the way back we are still waiting for a apple crumble and custard. This then soon arrived a full 20 minutes after my wife's! See pictures, wifes now eat, my lonesome spoon. I started eating it, then noticed my apple crumble and custard had turned into apple pie and ice-cream! So you cannot even have what you order? When the plate was collected we asked for the bill only to be asked, "Was everything okay with your meal"? I gave her the list! Then was told its a new desert Chef in training! Well I am sure most people can read the word custard, training or not. Just sorry about that, not i will go and tell the Manager. What a complete let down on what was to be a special day. I could not wait to leave the place. I do take notice of reviews and I hope others take notice of this on. I am full of praise on reviews when premises deserve it, this one deserves nothing, shame you cannot give no stars.

Hotel itself is a nice little place. Plenty of parking and in good driving distances of various attractions and big cities. Bath and Bristol 30 mins away, Weston super mare not much further, Haynes motor museum is 45 mins away and Castle Coombe race track about 10 mins away. Yate is 10 mins away with retail park, cinema etc. Room and hotel were clean generally bar and restaurant were also clean. Room had issues with the shower and toilet seat, the seat was loose/broken and the shower had low pressure due to it leaking at the wall. Not big issues just general maintenance, this was in room 6. The inn is on a busy A road with good links there is alot of traffic but it certainly didn't cause us any issues. We had issues with the meals we had in the restaurant. On the Tuesday night we ordered Chicken Tikka and Salmon Florentine, we were told later, 10-15 mins after ordering, that these weren't available so had to choose alternatives. Then for breakfast I ordered eggs Benedict, to be told they didn't have muffins so it would be toast. Again not a big issue, what I did have issue with is the toast was cooked (burnt) on one side only, the hollandaise was split, there was no ham and the eggs were hard poached. Not exactly what I expected, no explanation offered as to why either. The meals on second night were available and very good, we had the Signature hunters chicken and sirloin steak which was cooked precisely as ordered (rare). Breakfast in the second day was a full English, the bacon was dry and salty it dried my mouth, the beans and mushrooms were cold too. I have stayed at other Greene King inns before and the food has been fantastic l, this experience didn't live upto expectations. Would of spoken to the staff but we had to leave quickly due to the passing of a close friend. Over all this is a nice place to stay and I'm sure the issues with the restaurant aren't common place seeing other reviews and how busy this place gets in an evening. Click nsidering we stayed on a Tuesday and Wednesday the restaurant was almost full each night. Will definitely consider going back again though, the staff were friendly and helpful for the majority of the stay, all had smiles on their faces and very pleasant. The bar/restaurant staff on Wednesday were great, even when a guest set the fire alarm off in their room!

This is not going to be a rant but, parts of this hotel are from the 14th century. This adds charm and there must be a lot of planing regulations etc. The building is looking a tad tiered to be honest. The bar and restaurant have peeling paint work and wallpaper. My room (18) was a good size but not without problems. The bed was fairly broken, it rattled and squeaked a lot and the foot end frame had broken spindles and a broken post end which rang like a bell when you moved in bed. I had to tie a sock around it to make it silent. The en suite bathroom was bloody freezing, there is an electric towel rail but this had no effect. The windows are sash and the wind howls through. There was no hot water at the sink but the bath and shower worked fine. Just made it hard to have a shave. I had to boil the kettle for this. The carpet and desk chair are very dirty and stained to say the least. Like I said a little tiered and in need of a re fresh. The breakfast was amazing. This building has real history, her majesty the Queen had also stopped there in 1981. This story is well documented. Free Wi-Fi but no mobile phone signal if that bothers you.
