The wow factor here is the beer garden on a sunny day. Drive past The Crown and it doesn't look terribly interesting from the road, but walk in through the generous car park and enter an oasis of tranquility. The pub has one of the best beer gardens I've been in, with a great layout of widely spaced tables and benches, with a scattering of deck chairs to free-lounge in. I'm guessing it must get really busy on the weekends, as there's a dedicated outdoor cooking gazebo. The pub was refurbished a few years ago, so looks neat, tidy and modern. This is a Greene King pub, so don't expect good beer. On tap was a house Best, St Austell Tribute, Green King IPA and Abbot Ale, all being some of the worst "beers" imaginable. (Easy to cellar, which was s why they have them). At least there was some decent lager on offer in the form of Asahi, Estrella Damm and Peroni. There is an extensive menu of pies and standard pub fare, sadly nothing that really shouts "quality" or "awesome". The vegetarian pea and mint risotto was modestly portioned, well dressed and filling, but there was no pizzaz; scampi and chips, "meh" though the chips were lovely and crispy; a margerhita pizza that was bigger than a small child, so top marks on that one for value for money. In all, the epitome of higher prices for mediocre food, so room for improvement.

Lovely pub nicely decorated with fantastic service. Didn't eat but food looked very good. Went back in July 2020. Covid safe and spotlessly clean. Staff were a real pleasure to deal with and felt completely safe. Food was on a limited menu but still loads of choice. Edit. Went back again today, lighting was awful in the restaurant, half the table was in darkness. Food came out in drips and drabs, probably over 5 minutes for it all to arrive. Steak was first then other food followed by chips for steak. Not sure what has happened but nowhere near as good as it was.. Edit: went back again and happy to say this time it was excellent 👌 food was perfect, service was a little slow but overall the whole experience was as good as it used to be. Will be back again for sure.

Turned up Saturday lunchtime not having booked. We were shown to a table no problem. Everything decorated for Christmas, had a lovely vibe. Staff were welcoming. Have been here before and had the pie and felt a bit underwhelmed. Not so today. Okay the two chicken pies were sold out, we plumped for the steak and ale. It was delicious. The beef was slow cooked for about a day apparently. Well filled pies, al denté vegetables, perfect chips soft on the inside with extra gravy. Could not fault. Desserts of toffee apple pie and jammy roly poly devoured and given full marks. Definitely will be back. Outdoor space looks inviting for a summer's evening.

EDIT to correct pub response below - I’ve never, ever, used the pub to park and get the bus anywhere - I’ve used it to come to the pub only! Which is what I said on the phone (before she hung up!) This business seem to want to lose customers by being extremely rude and lying. Weird.

Further, I described the parking system as ‘newer’, not new. I haven’t been while it’s been in place, unsure why that is even worth a comment from you to be honest.

Last edit to say, I think the worst part of this is that your barmaid spoke the way she did and you have not even commented on it let alone apologised.

Thanks for the £20 fine in order to spend money in your pub. Really really poor behaviour from you.

Parking fine for visiting the pub.

Just had a terrible call with a member of staff here. My friend and I came in on a Saturday evening. We had one pint each and then left. We had parked in the carpark, as we have before, but not seen the newer signs saying you have to let the bar staff know your registration number when you go in.

The bar staff also didn't ask us for our car reg (the rude woman on the phone just told me they are supposed to, but 'sometimes one slips through').

On Monday I got a letter from an aggressive parking company demanding money for not parking within the parking regulations (ie giving them my reg).

I called the pub on Monday and explained we had been customers and spent money in there so we should be able to park - I was told to provide evidence of our custom to the enforcement company and it would be cancelled, which I did yesterday.

The enforcement company just replied saying I still have to pay a fine despite the evidence of payment to the pub on the night.

I just called the pub to ask them to help, and the woman who answered said no. I said I thought it was embarrassing of them to make customers have to pay enforcement fines despite having spent money in the pub, and she said she's not embarrassed and that they don't care anyway as they're always fully booked!!!! (again, they were practically empty on the Saturday night we went in - there was no one else sat in the main bar and only one other couple sat in the fireplace area).

Then she hung up on me! It's such an odd way for a company to behave. I can totally understand not wanting people to use the carpark if they're not using the pub, but we did use it and have before - my friend lives right near them in the village!

We're two intelligent people and we didn't notice the signs either when entering or exiting. The staff didn't mention the new rule either. If there's no flexibility on this then you...

Terrible....service. I called to book a table for 3 adults. On the day we arrived with a extra member...a child aged 4. I felt like I'd done something wrong..of course our table was only booked for three. We were greeted and seated on the tiniest round table which was inadequate and far too small for anymore than 2 people. We asked if we could move tables and use one of the square 4 seater tables and were told no. However during the duration of our stay, staff went on to seat couples of two on the tables that seated 4...highly annoying as our table was clearly too small and we had been told no when we requested to move. Moving on to the food ..... another disappointment - we were given a menu which stated the starters, mains and desserts for the sunday. We were informed after we received the vegetables and lack of them that it was a set portion of veg to share between two...(consisting of a small portion of cauliflower cheese, which came in a child sized portion in a individual bowl the Julien carrots, cabbage and a few green beans which in it's entirety I could've probably fit in the palm of my hand).... there were 3 adults and nowhere near enough vegetables to split between two people let alone 3 and a child...forcing us to purchase more vegetables. When we asked for another portion we were told they were free but then found them added on to the bill at the end! When we queried it we were made to feel uncomfortable. Having to explain who said what about the veg! At the end of our main course we were asked if we would like the dessert menu...we agreed. We were given a menu which was completely different to the original menu for desserts that we were shown in the first instance......there were at least 2 options that were not shown..in particular the Lemon tart was not shown as available on the second dessert menu and it was there written in black and white in the first menu! The roast beef was nice and perfectly cooked but I think that really is the 1 positive that I can think of. I Think I probably would've got a better meal for the price at Toby Carvery, knowing I could've added more vegetables for free! My friends and I will not be...
