Ah, The George Inn — the kind of place where you pop in for one pint and somehow emerge three hours later having adopted a new local friend, sampled half the bar, and decided life’s actually not so bad after all.
Nestled in the picturesque market town of Oundle, The George is what you might call “proper”. It’s got history in its bricks, warmth in its hearth, and just enough wobble in the floorboards to remind you that you’re somewhere with character (not in need of a builder, thank you very much).
The pint selection is cracking — a fine mix of local ales, lagers that don’t taste like regret, and a gin shelf that could make a botanist weep with joy. The staff are proper legends: quick with a smile, even quicker with a top-up, and they somehow remember what you ordered after just one round. Witchcraft.
As for the food — top-notch. The Sunday roast is the stuff of family feuds (who needs Mum’s when The George does gravy like that?), and if you leave without trying the sticky toffee pudding, I’m afraid we can’t be friends.
There’s a lovely outdoor area too, where you can sip your pint while pretending you’re doing something vaguely productive, like walking the dog or thinking deeply about life. Mostly you’ll just be enjoying the sun and wondering if you really have to go home.
In short, The George Inn is the kind of pub you wish was at the end of your road. Warm, welcoming, and dangerously easy to fall in love with. Go once, and you’ll be back faster than you can say...
Read moreVisited here with my wife and a couple friends (plus a dog, they are dog friendly) for a Sunday roast in late September and we all agreed it was one of the best roast dinners we'd ever had.
Though a big praise goes to the exceptional service we received. To say they went above and beyond would be an understatement.
My wife and one of our friends are dairy intolerant and although this was mentioned in the table pre-booking, my wife was just expecting what most other restaurants do and say that ABC contains dairy and they'd omit it. Or if you're lucky, they might replace or give extra XYZ that doesn't contain dairy.
This is not good enough for The George Inn though. As soon as we'd arrived and asking if we were getting the Sunday Roast, our server immediately went to the kitchen. I just assumed he was informing the chef to be careful with ingredients but he returned to say the chef was making dairy free Yorkshire Puddings. This was certainly a small treat for my wife as she usually has to avoid the Yorkshire Puddings.
The food came out, dairy free Yorkshire Puddings for my wife and our friend with dairy free gravy (another treat!). Usual vegetables that come with the roast but then out comes two separate bowls of cauliflower cheese - one with dairy and one without. Again an absolute treat and definitely not something my wife and friend were expecting.
A superb meal and we were really appreciative of the efforts of the...
Read moreWow! So me, my mum and my partner came in this afternoon for Sunday lunch. We haven’t been since the refurb/change of hands. We were promptly shown our table and given menus. I personally had the beetroot and tofu wellington, my partner had the roast lamb and my mum had the roast beef. All were delicious and packed with flavour.
Unfortunately there were a few flaws; my mum’s roast beef meal lacked roast potatoes (which are a staple in any roast dinner) and to be honest, were not roast potatoes at all. They seemed to be mere chunks of new potatoes and lightly sautéed but we understand that the kitchen staff are still learning. Also my partner said his roast lamb was delicious but had a little too much fat on it for his liking.
But other than that; lunch was delicious and we will definitely come back to try out the other meals on the menu.
Dessert was delicious; both me and my partner had the chocolate brownie and it was not too overwhelming or sweet but very soft and enjoyable.
Also our server Susie/Suzie was very helpful and very friendly!
Thank you! Will...
