We stayed in a local holiday cottage over October half term while on holiday with my wife, children and in-laws.
I visited this pub on Saturday tea time with my father in law for a couple of beers each. The manager politely told as that as he had tables booked up from 7.00pm onwards, we would have to vacate the tables by that time. We had our beers and left well before 7.00pm. Plenty of time to clean the table. While sitting we did not see any people turn up to use the tables at the rear of the pub, it was empty.
The following day on the Sunday we returned at 5.30pm for our 2 beers each. This time we were told by the manager that we would have to sit outside in the garden as the table were shortly in use.
We sat in a cold garden in the wind and rain. No umbrellas or shelter was provided and non of the patio heaters were on.
We spoke too, two disgruntled local lads who basically were not very polite about the establishment.
After 1 hour in the cold wind and rain we left. During this period we saw only 1 family actually turn up to use the tables at the rear of the pub. So in actual fact we could have quite easily sat down and drunk a beer with still time for them to wipe down the tables after.
On leaving the pub garden another party of 5 adults turned up and asked us if they were allowed to drink inside. We explained what happened and they swiftly left and said they would go to another pub they new that welcomed drinkers.
We never returned to the pub after that as we decided that the pub obviously did not want our money. Despite the fact that we planning on taking the family out for dinner there in the week.
We decided to go to alternative places instead.
I totally understand that pubs need to maximise profits and that people eating need to take priority. We would have been quite happy to sit in the garden every night for a beer providing that we had some type of warm or shelter. Even a 3rd world pub could supply this, Let alone a pub in a busy tourist area.
The fact that they used the excuse of the tables being booked on the second night to me just appears to be an excuse. If they donāt want drinkers money. Thatās fine just put a sign up outside saying āno drinkers please, food onlyā
However, I have had the last laugh. The beer was over 5 pound a pint. I estimate that the pub overheads would not be more than £2 a pint. So they lost £3 a pint profit. So I estimate that they loss out on a further £64 on beer profits alone for the following 5 days let alone the profits from if we had eaten in the pub as a family.
Letās hope they donāt miss my money during the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe are on holiday from Coventry and have just visited this beautiful pub for our evening meal. As soon as we walked in (I'm guessing manager or landlord) made us extremely welcome. We had our very nervous German Shepherd with us and even he felt settled and comfortable. The table staff were very polite, courteous and absolutely lovely. We weren't constantly interrupted whilst eating apart from the odd beggy German Shepherd paw. Now to the meal. Absolutely beautiful. Beautifully presented, cooked perfectly and possibly the best pub meal we've had in a long time. The pub itself is so comfortable and cosy and everything you would want from a place to relax and enjoy an evening meal on a rainy day before returning to camping. I cannot say much more apart from please visit this pub as it really was the loveliest experience with the warmest of welcomes. JUST WONDERFUL! Thank you all at The George Inn for a lovely...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWent for lunch here yesterday 18th July with my partner and her mum as we were in charmouth on holiday from Broadstairs in kent. First thing your greeted with is a lovely clean cosy place and then the lovely polite warm greeting, straight away we felt at home, the ladies who served us were fantastic and nothing was to much. Our cavapoo felt at home also and feel asleep in no time lol. I had the beef pate burger and they had the fish and chips. The presentation was first class and all the meals were too. My beef burger was fresh beef and was thick and filling. I'd read about the George before we left home and was determined to visit it for dinner and it was so worth it. Lovely pub and can't wait to visit again when we come down in November. Thankyou to all the staff for making us welcome. I had to thank the chef as I walked past the kitchen on way to the car, well hope it was the chef lol. See...
