When shown my room (No.3) before dinner it seemed great. However, when I retired at 10.15pm, the noise from a compressor or extractor was so intrusive I thought Iโd never fall asleep. I persuaded myself it was akin to the throbbing of an overnight ferry and was sufficiently tired that I did manage to sleep โ until 02.00 when I was woken by a loud crash.||By then the noise had stopped, however, the room was so cold that I couldnโt get back to sleep. There were no spare bed clothes or heater in the room. By 05.00 I thought I would warm myself with a cup of tea. It was only then that I realised the room was devoid of almost everything Iโd expected โ facilities for making hot drinks, drinking water & glass, a heater, spare blanket, tissues & television or radio. Ironically, I did have a TV remote controller in the room, but no TV!||A little later there was a different loud noise that sounded like a diesel engine coming from the room next door, ruining any chance of sleep prior to breakfast.||I didnโt mention any of this at the time because there was nothing that could have been done about rectifying the situation at 02.00, and also being the leader of a group whose rooms were all satisfactory, I wasnโt going to begin the holiday by complaining. ||I did, however, write to The Golden Lion a week later and asked them how they could, in all conscience, charge the same rate for a noisy, cold and stark room as the others. They may not have been able to quieten the room but they could have checked that it had the facilities with which it was advertised and turned on the heating.||The owners have chosen to ignore my email, from which I must deduce that either they donโt care at all, and/or...
ย ย ย Read moreJust home from a week away at a beautiful Holiday at Home property in the village of Osmotherley in North Yorkshire, the icing on the cake was our visits to the Golden Lion a village pub and then some!!! On our first visit which was just after opening the first thing we noticed is that nearly all tables were displaying reserved cards, in less than an hour the tables began to fill and not long after the pub was full of people placing orders for food, we were told that this is normal by the customers and staff alike, we quickly enquired if there was any availability for several days throughout our stay, fortunately we were in luck. All I can say is the staff are fantastic, the beer is perfectly kept and the food is outstanding. I'd like to thank all the staff for making us feel welcome, and a massive thank you to James as he has looked after us so well on every visit. All I can say to the people reading the reviews is if you are in the area call in and give it a go you won't be...

This pubs interior is well old school and Its not the kind of place thats trying too hard. It's just a small local pub, What you see is what you get.
Where the Golden Lion really shines is it's food offering. The menu is short and concise which for me always shows a degree of self awareness. Its not a jack of all trades master of none.
Every dish we ordered from the menu was absolutely 1st class. Pumpkin and Bacon soup which had so much flavour. Beautifully cooked lamb cutlets with wonderfully creamy mash.
I tried the muscles for starters and they were probably some of the best i've eaten in a very long time. They weren't New Zealand green lipped however they were the biggest of the native variety that i've tried.
The flavours guys! For pub food it's...
