This is a Sunday lunch review. We visited in November for a family birthday and it was superb. We even recommended friends staying there for one night in December and they were not impressed - but that is another matter.||We booked 4 days before and asked for a table at 1215 hours in the restaurant NOT THE BAR. The man I spoke to said he would put the 3 of us on table 4. It was another birthday event and we took our teenage grandson there. We arrived and a man was stood at the bar (?landlord) plus a young woman. I said we had booked a table and was told it would be table 4. She dropped her voice and I couldn’t at first make out what she said , something about an event in the restaurant and she had put us opposite the bar, which turned out to be a high table with those extra high wooden bar stools in the Bar area. If we hadn’t had our grandson with us we would have walked as there are many other pubs in close proximity. When the food arrived I immediately noticed how the proportion had reduced since November but the price had increased. Before I had 4 slices of meat but today just two. The broccoli was so hard you could hardly put a fork in it. Very little veg for 3 people though they did have cauliflower cheese which not everyone likes. The Yorkie tasted like shop bought and warmed up. Certainly didn’t taste like home-made ones. We had recommended this place for B&B following our initial visit in November but never again. They had our phone number and having booked for the restaurant and even given the table number it was very underhand to stick us on such an awful high table/bar stools for what should have been a nice birthday lunch. Some older people might struggle getting on those high stools and there were other low tables around at the back which would have been better. The man at the bar never even apologised but could see we were not happy. The final straw was when we left at just before 1.00 pm, not bothering to stay for a pudding - there was absolutely NOBODY in the restaurant. Dreadful experience and will never go back.||The only positive is the meat is cooked beautifully but that can’t make up for the rest.||The lesson here is be honest and if you can’t accommodate someone in the restaurant then have the courtesy of phoning. We did not wish to spend time in a fairly noisy area with two dogs and...
Read morePopped in for a table for two this evening, unfortunately we entered through the wrong temporary Covid allocated door from the car park, which when its dark at 6pm and the place is completely empty the only thing illuminated that you can see is the word ‘Entrance’ even on our way out we needed our phone lights to make out a badly printed no entry sign - anyhow we politely apologised for this and after she finished barking about that some more on our way to fill out the Track & Trace form she started to howl again - barking ‘mask’ ‘mask’ to me despite clearly wearing an exemption lanyard, after she barked ‘mask’ a few more times she was told and clearly showed the somewhat obvious lanyard hanging around my neck by my colleague wearing his mask - the barking stopped - no apology - I think even the polite staff member that welcomed us in was half wondering what he was bothering doing there to be honest - I have just recently relocated my business to the area and thought I would treat one of my guys to a meal, initially I thought perhaps because it was Monday and I wasn't wearing my Schoffel & Chameau Wellies she was just one of these old types that judge people on impact or for wearing a hat or something but now I've read the other reviews I understand. Not somewhere I will be recommending to my visiting customers that is for sure. I have however given 1 Star for the polite staff member who even after we decided it wasn't welcoming enough for us to stay said...
Read morePreviously a 5* review but has slipped significantly over the last three years. It is an excellent location but dogged by less than accommodating kitchens. On several occasions over the last year I have gone to the Green Dragon and been disappointed. There have now been too many times that I have tried to buy food whilst the kitchen is open, only to be given excuses by embarrassed bar staff that the kitchen is either too busy, despite only a spattering of tables occupied; or being told that I can only have a light bite or starter if I am willing to buy a whole three course dinner. The staff seem to be fearful of the land lady as they report of being "told off" for allowing a fellow customer to have a selection of starters (bread and olives, whitebait) without ordering full meals. It leaves me feeling that this is driven by greed. Other patrons reported previously being told that "The kitchen has made enough money for today, so we are closing". I live in Wiltshire and can confirm that there are many fantastic village pubs with the warmest of welcomes in neighbouring villages (The Oak in Easterton, the Lamb in Urchfont, the Bell in Cheverell). There is absolutely no need to settle for...
