Really disappointed!!! We used to frequent The Horns Inn quite often and always enjoyed our visits. After being unable to get out for a while we were looking forward to a nice meal at The Horns Inn. Unfortunately, our recent visit on 01/08/17 was far from enjoyable, To begin with one of the meals we ordered was no longer available so we had to order an alternative, Beef & Double Gloucester Pie was chosen, looked great when it arrived and to be fair didn’t taste too bad, but if you were expecting any Double Gloucester Cheese you can forget it, the amount of cheese we could find wasn’t even half a teaspoon. When the waiter came around to check on our meal we pointed out that the pie wasn’t what we expected, he did apologise and said that he would speak to the chef, on his return he advised us that the Pie was as is should be, the cheese had just melted into the pie!! But if we were not happy they would change it or we could try another Pie, we changed it for the Cumberland Sausage and mash, (of which we have had before, so thought it would be a safe bet….) The waiter brought over a plate with the money difference between the two dishes for us, but to be honest on the very few occasions we have had to complain at other restaurants they have always insisted a refunded of plate in full. (not that we were expecting this, but it would have been a nice gesture) As soon as it arrived we could tell it was not the usual dish that we have had in the past from The Horns Inn that we thoroughly enjoyed. The sausages were insipid looking, had no flavour and from the texture of them you could tell they were a cheap variety, the gravy was watery and had no body to it and there was very little mash of which had no flavour. The Waiter chose not to come over the second time to check if everything was ok but instead sent a young waitress over who unfortunately got our disappointment, we did explain that it was not her fault but it is down to the management and the chef. We had four main meals, the one I have highlighted above, an ultimate Burger that was ok but the Burger was small and very dry, A Lasagna that was mainly pasta sheets and cheese sauce, not much meat and a Hunters Chicken which was the best option although the chicken was much smaller and thinner than we remembered but tasted ok. All in all, the experience was one we would not wish to repeat and The Horns Inn have lost a customer and we will not be recommending them to our friends and family, A wasted couple of hours and a waste of money.
Have only given one star, for the poor waitress that had succumb to a disappointment down to the...
Read moreI wanted to take my mother in law out for Sunday lunch on New Years Eve. I phoned late in the morning to book a table for 1.30pm. The person who took my booking annoyingly consistently referred to me as 'buddy'.
We arrived at 1.15 and went to the bar to tell them we had arrived. The pub was not busy and there were four staff stood at the end of the bar chatting to each other so I approached them for assistance. After standing in front of them for about 10 seconds I had to wave my arms around and say ''Hello' before I was acknowledged. We were looking forward to the lovely open fire as mentioned on the website but unfortunately it was turned off on a cold winter's day. We were then escorted to our table by an extremely pleasant member of staff. I ordered drinks for us both, requesting that the brandy for my mother in law was served in a correct brandy glass. Either they don't know what a brandy balloon glass is or they just don't have any as it arrived in a tumbler. We were both looking forward to a Sunday roast but were informed by the couple at the next table (not the staff) that the roast was 'off'. I wanted to order our food from the table but was told by the waitress we had to order at the bar, there is no notification of this either at the table or at the bar. I then went to the bar to order our lunch and once again I had to disrupt the conversation of two staff members to do so. The menus are of the wipe clean variety but every one I looked at was covered in all sorts of sticky stuff - they are put back in the holders without seemingly ever being cleaned. The wall by our table (no 19) looked like it had had a pint of coke or something spilt on it weeks ago and never been cleaned. Likewise, the upholstered dining chairs were also badly stained by what appeared to be spilt drinks or food on them, I do not know what their cleaning policy is but it is failing badly.
On a good note, the food that we did order, one venison and one beef pie was excellent and good value. Also for a change, the toilets were clean and non smelly. The table staff were also very pleasant and did most of their job well. I did leave a tip as the food and the service we received at the table was very good. However, if you intend to compete with somewhere like The Curlew which is just down the road you are going to have to up your game a bit with regard to customer service and pay more attention to the cleanliness of the fabric of the building. I rarely post comments either praising or complaining about service but on this occasion I felt it to be necessary as we were both disappointed...
Read moreWe visited this pub for our Christmas do (26 of us). When we arrived we found we'd been put in the snug, unfortunately there really wasn't enough room for us so this had to be rearranged. We all got seated and waited for our starters. And waited. And waited. Eventually a staff member asked if we were ready and the starters started to come out....slowly. The staff had several extra plates and kept asking if anyone hadn't had one yet, bizarre. The mains followed even slower and sadly 7 of us got meals while the rest sat and waited. When the 7 had finished eating, 3 more mains came out then staff asked us if we all had our food, sadly 15 of us didn't so the young lady rolled her eyes and walked off without another word. We finished up our mains and pudding followed before everyone had had their plate cleared away then more carnage, 5 people sat waiting for another 30mins while more puddings were brought out followed by staff bringing extra plates and wondering around asking if anyone needed a pudding. We were offered no apology for the mishaps or bad service yet treated to another eye roll, different member of staff this time with a spin on the heel and a gentle suggestion of when were leaving as I assume the wanted the tables back as the pub was getting quite busy. No cheery goodbyes or thanks from any staff. Several of the roast dinners had pigs in blankets missing and we were offered these after the meals had been finished. We couldn't speak to a member of staff about this whilst the dinners were coming out as they weren't around. When I tried to ask for some mint sauce the young girl walked off while I was talking to her and I had shout excuse me quite loudly for her to come back, the mint sauce was served in the jar with a spoon (classy) but there was only a scraping left - we didn't bother to ask for more as the staff attitude towards our party was so frosty. The food was very nice (except the roast potatoes which I'll be honest were disgusting and you needed a steak nice to get through them, they were both burnt and anaemic - looked microwaved) and hot and fresh. Very disgusting service so sadly wouldn't book here for any further staff dos. They treated us as inconvenience, not a massive money earner and were completely inattentive, rude and didn't seem to be able to...
