Short notice about a family illness meant we had to change our meal plans. Quickly looked at the reviews and gave The Hornsmill a try. Very easy to find and lenty of space in the car park. Greeted as soon as we came in and shown straight to our table, first impressions were very good as there were no tables waiting to be cleared and the whole place was very clean. Ordered 2 flat whites, glass if milk and a J20, all arrived quickly whilst we decided what to eat, sorry but was disappointed with my flat white. Huge choice from the main menu and a separate menu for the Sunday lunch and that days specials. Our daughter is a fussy eater and our server was very happy to change from the menu for her, rest of the family ordered a full roast beef Sunday lunch, a smaller portion Turkey lunch and a fillet steak. Food arrived after a reasonable wait and looked and tasted very good, even the smaller Turkey lunch portion was bigger than expected. Only complaint from my son was that the chips were soft, but his steak was cooked perfectly and the peppercorn sauce was really nice. Desserts were a smaller choice compared to the amount of mains available but there was still something for everyone. I decided on the small rhubarb and pear crumble served with an americano, which was better than the flat white. Wife had 2 scoops of ice cream and a coffee, daughter had the triple brownie and son had the massive banoffee waffle with salted caramel sauce. All were nicely presented and tasted divine. For the quality of food, surroundings and service the prices were very good and I have paid more for less on all fronts. Can honestly say we'll be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe arrived early so went to the bar, I ordered a round at which point my Father was informed in a sullen manner by the scouser behind the counter that the bitter was off. He politely asked if it was all gone or would the barrel be changed the response was that heād change it in ten or fifteen minutes.
We were then informed that we hadnāt shown up for our table; they had booked us in for midday not 8pm. This seemed to annoy the chap from behind the bar who, it was becoming clear, was either the manager or had delusions of grandeur. They buggered about for ten or fifteen minutes at which point we were told in a dismissive tone āthe table is ready when you areā as though we were somehow to blame for their mistake.
We sat down surrounded by flies, the double doors to the rear of garden were open, and chose our meals. We placed our orders and moments later the waitress came back to inform us that they had sold out of the Beef burgers, we change our orders. She then returned to inform us that they were out of fish and chips, we changed our orders. In short they had sold out of half the menu before 8.30 on a Saturday night. It boded well for their cooking but not for their planning. I assume it was beans on toast all-round for Sunday lunch.
The food was mediocre, small portioned and overpriced, the chap behind the bar was a pratt and the waitresses were very nice, helpful and apologetic. The single star is for them, Iād award them five but it would be misinterpreted as a positive review of this shabby...
