Been coming to this cafe for a few years as we frequent the antiques shop on a regular basis. Never had any complaints until today. Only one member of staff to cope with a deluge of customers who all came in at the same time; she was quite clearly overwhelmed and could not cope with having to constantly switch from preparing orders to taking orders and payment at the counter. We waited approximately 25 minutes for some soft drinks and scones. At times I was half tempted to go behind the counter myself and lend a hand because it was highly frustrating for me to watch her have to deal with multiple orders and customers by herself. Orders were half prepared and left in the preparation area while she would go to the counter and attend to another customer. I wasn't angry at her, more the management for making her job so much harder than it had to be and frustrating for all of the customers who were waiting also.
Lastly, I think the cost of the food was rather inflated. £3.00 for a tiny scone and cream wasn't available because in the words of the attendant, it didn't arrive in the order. No excuses when there's a supermarket less than half a mile away. Felt ripped off.
We won't be coming back again to the cafe which is a shame as we've been supporting it for...
Read moreSadly, this place started going downhill since the refurb from Barn Owl days. As a frequent visitor I have seen staff come and go and food quality come and go too. A few members of staff since the refurb have been amazing , but it looks like new staff are working there now and I think they could do with a lot more training in terms of basic skills such as needing to be more welcoming, offering suggestions and choices, and keeping an eye on what point customers are up to with their meals/snacks. No serviettes given today, budget bread (rather than farmhouse), cheapo sachets of sauces and sugars (the latter had hardened), had to remind staff that I was still awaiting my food. We used to love coming here, but it's more of a canteen than a bistro these days, in looks, food quality...
Read moreUnfortunately, came up for the bank holiday weekend. A relatively nice quiet spot. I think a bit unlucky as there appeared to be new staff, took 30mins to get the coffee machine working, the breakfast was nice when it arrived. Not sure how much training they had received but probably could have been better supported. Unfortunately, I overheard a chap who appeared local come in to say he had food poisoning and wanted to speak with the new chef, AFTER id finished my breakfast. Unfortunately, 24 hours later I felt pretty flu like and 30 hours later I was vommiting, rigors and fever. I can't say for 100% sure it was this breakfast, but was one of the few my wife and I...
