We go to the Yorkshire coast at least twice a year. One of the things we look forward to is our visit to the oak wheel, for a meal. We are in the caravan club, and if anyone say they are going to the Yorkshire coast, we tell them if they are near, they should go to the oak wheel, if friends are going we tell them the same. We went last Wednesday night ( we booked it 3 weeks ago ). We parked in the car park, walked through the beer garden to find out a no entry sign saying no entry, as a one way system was in operation. ( given coved 19, understandable ), But would help if they had a sign letting you know before hand. We went round to the front entrance, where there is a table with hand sanatizer, and a sign saying please wait to be seated. With staff passing us, and we are facing the bar, after 20 minutes I had to go to the bar and ask if anyone was going to see to us. The barman told use what table was ours and said someone would come and take our drink and food order. After half an hour no one had come to us, so I went back to the bar and ordered our drink and ask for a menu. A waitress came over and threw a sheet of paper on the table, which turned out to be the reduced menu. We had our 9 year old granddaughter with us, but we were not asked if we wanted the children's menu. After another 15 minutes I had to ask someone to take our food order, and if they had a children's menu. Other people came in, and the staff was falling over themselves to get to serve them. Although the food did not take that long to come out, after seeing that I was ready to leave without eating. When the food did come one plate of chips was put on the table and the rest come out, I had to ask if any more chips was coming out, only to be told the one plate was between the 3 of use. Even though I was having a steak I had to ask for a steak knife. We decided not to have a pudding as we did not know how long it would take. We left through the one way system, other customers was coming though the no entry from the beer garden. Passing staff who said nothing. There was planty of staff on for the amount of customers. Most of the waiting staff looked 14 or 15 years old ( I don't know if they are or not ). The older one that served us with blondish hair and glasses, was very abrupt, and made me feel like I was putting her out. This is the first time I have not left a tip. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THE OAK WHEEL, and everyone we have recommended it too, we will now unrecommended. If your face does not fit, expect a long wait, and...
Read moreOn 16th June we stayed one night in the very level car park in our motorhome. It was really quiet after the pub had closed and, apart from the dawn chorus about 3am, and our kitty snoring, the only other disturbance was when the traffic started up on the nearby road at about 6am.||||Now, to the pub...||This is a traditional pub and you can only expect them to make so many adaptations for wheelchair users without seriously affecting the character of the pub. At the rear, from the beer garden area, there are steps into the pub. At the front the main entrance is relatively step free, in that there is a drop of about two inches or less as you enter. Due to the narrow entrance it was impossible for my wife to drive her chair backwards in order to negotiate that drop when we left. Other than that she could get through the internal double doors when they were both opened.||Note to owners....||levelling off the small drop would make entry and egress so much easier for wheelchair users.||||Once inside, there was a table set up for us close to the entrance; that was really easy for my wife to access and use.||||She could not access the toilets as they were on a slightly higher level, without a ramp. That said, I was forewarned about that when I booked. It wasn't such an inconvenience for us as we could have used our motorhome outside.||||Now, the service and food...||From entering to leaving we experienced excellent service, particularly from the fella behind the bar; I think his name was Craig. Nothing was too much trouble for him.||He introduced me to Timothy Taylor's Landlord, and I must say, the licencees keep it very well; that first pint went down so well, as did the second, then the third!||||The food...||I had pan fried salmon with sautéed potatoes, in a light sweet chilli sauce. I'm not a heat lover, but this was delicately spiced and suited my pallete. My wife had the pan fried chicken in Diane sauce, and she said it was melt-in-the-mouth delicious. In themselves, the portion sizes were good, but add to that the perfectly cooked sides of vegetables, and the excellent hand cut chips, neither of us had any room for dessert.||||When travelling up this way again in our motorhome we will certainly look at staying here, perhaps...
Read moreI’m not really sure where to start. I’ve never left a bad review in my life. We have visited Scalby for the past 3 years with my parents, my in-laws and our 3 year old. We booked The Oak Wheel for Mother’s Day lunch and when I rang to book they said the earliest reservation is 12pm, although we could arrive slightly early as they actually open their doors at 11:45am. I distinctly remembering the man I spoke to saying we could get settled at our table and that staff start taking food orders at 12. We arrived at 11:52 and before I could even sit down one of the members of staff quite aggressively told me that we were late and we were supposed to have our order in by 12. I told her this wasn’t what I was told on the phone and her reply was that we could only order roasts now and nothing else from the menu - which left us with a small choice of 3 roast options (and two of our party don’t like meat). I was totally taken aback, not only was she incredibly rude but it was embarrassing in front of the other diners. Despite her wasting two minutes being rude to us, we STILL managed to get our order in by 12 and were then rudely told we had to be gone by 13:15. We rushed our mains but then had to wait some time for staff to take our desert orders (we eventually had to call someone over). We also rushed our deserts and left by 13:10. The whole experience was just awful and incredibly upsetting. This was supposed to be a lovey day for us and it was completely ruined by appalling customer service which was just utterly uncalled for. We will be returning to Scalby for years to come, but I can safely say we will never be returning to The Oak Wheel. Politeness and kindness...
