A real shame to rate this 2 stars rather than 5. My husband and friends organised my baby shower here on Sunday 5th November as a surprise and we had a wonderful time. The venue was beautiful (we used the barn) and the food was lovely however no one came and spoke to us the entire day. The reason for the 2 star rating comes from a rude and abrupt phone call from Selena demanding my husband paid that day (he of course was happy to pay that day, he had however just just tidied a venue, said goodbye to 20 guests, taken home 2 elderly ladies back home, and made sure his 36 week pregnant wife was home too. Upon the phone call he was sent a bill for over £400.. we had been charged the £22.95 buffet option rather than £12.95 - luckily we had in writing that was had requested this option as my husband was accused by Selena of LYING as she claimed she had called my husband on the 18th October and confirmed with him this was the buffet of choice. This of course was not true, and no phone records showed any evidence of this. By this point my husband very calmly explained that’s not true to which the response was ‘well the bill is £200 more so it needs to be sorted’ low and behold… Selena speaks to the manager who then agrees our correct price and a chunk of money comes off the bill.. but not quite the amount we expect. When questioned, the service charge had been left on! We didn’t have any service all day? No one spoke to us, helped us, checked we were okay, gave us any indication we needed to order a drink at the bar, embarrassing. We removed this and paid the bill to which my husband received a meak ‘thanks for your understanding’ not entirely sure that’s an apology but oh well. Monday arrives, my mother in law says she has left her card at the pelican. No phone call answered, voice mail left and no call back all day or evening. So now we have no idea if a card has been handed in or not. Unacceptable and quite frankly feels personal after the way we were treated Sunday.
Such a shame, I would love to come back here for future events but I don’t feel like I would sadly after...
Read moreWe attended The Pelican for the festivities of my sister’s 33rd birthday. Initially impressed with the chic interior decor and good selection of food and drinks options, things soon began to unravel. Following a brisk winter walk we had discussed the delight of a warm open fire whilst we dined. The Pelican is equipped with the asset of a fine log burner - ignited it was not! Coupled with a draught we failed to feel the warmth of the inn. 5 of us ordered and things went well with the starters - good quality fare. Sadly at the main course 4 of us received what we had ordered but the birthday girl was brought a cauliflower roast (she had ordered the roast butternut squash). We explained this to the waiting staff and were simply informed there was no butternut squash today. No solutions, no apologies, no deductions. I can’t fault the quality of the food we did receive but this soured the day no end. Ultimately a butternut squash salad was produced but she did have...
Read moreFantastic find in a beautiful village. Chew Magna is a great area for dog walking and the Pelican is the perfect after stop. The interior is clean, comfortable, cozy and warm and dog friendly just like it's staff who were also very people friendly, helpful and efficient; perfect for us and our nervous (and slightly odd) geriatric rescue lurcher/saluki, Jacob. Food was excellent. There was a very slight kitchen mix up but it was fixed immediately and the 5 minute extra wait was worth it, the kitchen and bar staff absolutely turned a whoops into a wow!! They have a nice bar menu and we were looking at full menu with the firm idea of coming back in the summer for evening walks and food. Staff were very attentive and explained what things were that I'd never tried. I might be spoiled forever now that I've thad piccalilli for the first time and it so was lovely and tasty and made freshly in house!! Very impressed. Thank you to the Pelican. We will...
