Sadly we didn’t have a great experience here after the raving reviews.

We went to pensford today on a walk for my husbands birthday and decided to finish here. When we arrived sadly they weren’t serving food anymore. We still bought drinks for 12 of us.

We went outside to enjoy the beer garden and one of our friends got out a cake she had made for my husband. We had been asked not to eat it but we got it out just to show him before hoping to consume elsewhere. Naively we thought they might allow us considering it was a birthday cake and they weren’t serving any food. One of the staff members then came outside telling us not only were we not allowed to eat it, it had to be off the premises otherwise she would have confiscated it. HA! We asked if they would allow it in the bag and with a bit of sarcasm and persuasion they allowed us to sit there with it in the boiling sun. She was incredibly rude and totally unreasonable - especially in the presence of children. Others in the garden were watching and we felt uncomfortable. We understand a rule is a rule but the way we were treated felt very unwelcoming.

On a side note, We have never been told we can’t eat birthday cake in a place that doesn’t serve cake.

We were made to feel so uncomfortable that we decided to leave and as we were leaving one of our group took some glasses inside and overheard the landlady saying ‘good riddance’ some...

Waitress delivered a dessert to the table that was immediately knocked on the floor by a baby. We asked if they would be willing to replace it. If she had said they can't then fair enough, however the waitress obliged and took the soiled dessert away. Not only did they charge for the replacement pudding, but attempted to over charge for multiple items than the price listed on the menu. When asked if the dessert should have been a free replacement, she became rude saying why would anything be free. I advised that she took the other one away so i havent received all the desserts theyre charging for and she started saying im blacklisted from the pub. She obviously knew we had asked if they would swap the pudding but took it as an opportunity to charge double. They attempted to charge more for items than the price on the menu and when called out they blamed it on the till, but how many people are they getting away with ripping off who don't check the detail on the bill? On top of all that there was a non optional service charge added to the bill. I've eaten here multiple times and although the view is nice and the food is usually good, the service has always been appalling, but this time its gone too far as they're clearly trying to rip off customers. Won't be...

I am an American, and I can't visit the UK without stopping in at the Rising Sun. I'll travel well out of my way to visit this little gem of a country pub in Pensford. The surroundings are really indescribably beautiful. The Church, the Viaduct, and the bubbling waters of the River Chew create an etherial and comforting atmosphere. You feel as if the worries of the world have melted away, and you've been transported to another realm. The pub garden, with its preternaturally green lawn, charming fairy lights, and babbling waters, might actually be my favorite place in the whole world. I really can't put into words just how much I love spending time there. There are also some nearby trails if you like a good country stroll after a nice meal or a pint. The food and drink are great, of course, and the staff have always been friendly and corteous. I can't wait to...

Nice pub with good Sunday roast. Seems to be family run. Was seated at the front of the pub which was basic but comfortable, and nice with an open fire, though the staff's repeated attempts to keep it going/relight it did amuse us. Service was alright. I have to say what stood out by a mile was the food. I ordered the pork belly roast, and my partner ordered the rare beef roast, and we shared the greens/cauliflower cheese side, and herb stuffing balls. The portion sizes are huge, but absolutely delicious! You had better come with an appetite! Afterwards we walked through the garden and did a circular walk around the viaduct. Definitely would visit again.

Lazy Sunday morning, my wife & I decided we’d really like a roast for lunch. We had a quick Google of places close to us that are slightly out of the city & The Rising Sun came up. Can’t really describe just how good the roast was - we had the braised beef short rib & a side of leek, broccoli & cauliflower cheese. Portion size was good, the meat was far more generous than I was expecting & the accompanying vegetables were fantastic. the overall vibe of the pub was perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon. We’re already thinking about our next visit - hopefully it’ll be sunny next time as it would be great to sit outside to get a full view of the aqueduct.

Get stuffed! In a good way. I called in with family in tow, having been hoping to do so and we were not disappointed. Pubs with a warm, happy vibe can be a rarity, but this has it in abundance. There's a great selection of ales, a nice cost space for all and the food is excellent. Don't expect to eat cheaply, as if you want decent food, you're going to have to pay for it. The menu is not your usual identikit fayre and I was pleased to see deer pie and venison steak on offer, both of which were excellent and generous in portion. The chips were heavenly and we all left stuffed to the gills. Dogs are welcome, as are families.
