After the shambles of Christmas on two occasions breakfast with Santa & the main issue was Christmas Day we was very disappointed. We used to visit this place weekly due to being our local pub with no problems until just recently over Christmas, it’s no way to treat a paying customer or run a business. Being let down by a booking for Christmas Day due to misinformation given in November & receiving a call a week before Christmas when looking through the bookings to say we wasn’t allowed to bring a dog. We knew this was a friendly dog pub & wanted to double check in November it was okay for Christmas Day which was answered yes & was even put onto the booking form it was only until Jess looked at all bookings a week before & realised it was on there. Also tried to change it round to say it was only a request only but it wasn’t as I wouldn’t have booked if this was the case & a full discussion explaining we’d be limited to certain area on hard floor which I didn’t have an issue on day of paying rest of balance. No alternative was given other than an apology & a refund. Explained we’d struggle to find an alternative at such short notice & if possibly a takeaway so we could have some food & not left without. It was agreed due to the mistake & wasn’t our fault, the manager said we will only charge festive menu & refund you the difference which they did & at same time we agreed a time for collection on Christmas Day for my partner to collect.
After resolving this & very disappointed, annoyed our family gathering for Christmas was ruin we tried our best with the alternative takeaway option. Come Christmas Day our meal wasn’t ready for 2pm my partner did have to wait another half hour & was offered a drink for the inconvenience. We understood as it’s so busy & delays can happen.
After my partner returning home with our food there was another problem. After the breakfast with Santa previously I was rest assured by Jess (manager partner Owen) everything will be fine for Christmas Day it wasn’t. The veg wasn’t enough to feed four adult they’d only sent 1 small container which probably would have only fed 1 adult & a small child but there was 4 adults. 1 gravy had exploded in the bag, only 4 tiny pots was given & ice cream was in with hot foods & also the prawn cocktails. I had to ask a neighbour for some gravy because we didn’t have any in.
I rang & explained there wasn’t enough food to feed us 4 & was told it was the same quantity as everyone else. I was also told we paid a fraction of the price than other on Christmas Day which we did but that was because of a fault of a member of staff why this happened in the first place. No intention at this point to resolve it other than keep the food & we will refund you. I told them we was going to return the food & look for themselves which we did.
On returning to the rose & crown, the manager was stud waiting at the door before we even parked the car. After getting out the car We were met with aggression and shouting by the manager in the car park, her partner also came out too but was told by Jess to get back inside. There was also members of the public unsure if relatives or friends but they was also outside. After informing Jess we was recording she soon changed her tune & stopped having a go at us saying we’d ruin her Christmas, accused every time we visited we’ve had issues which we’ve never had & she’d fed 160 people Christmas Day etc. she also said we’d had the same as everyone else I even got the veg out to show how much had been sent & wasn’t interested. No intention to resolve it or offer more veg/gravy, no apology for the mistaken. It was only until her sister Lisa came to door to say Jess needed to go back inside to work but she had time to wait for us & ask what we needed more off to resolve it. At this point she said she was going to refund & had to go back the next day for this due to wasn’t even allowed in the pub Christmas Day. Am sure cctv can confirm this the way it carried on Christmas Day! This is no way to conduct business & I have contacted head...
Read more2.5 stars. Whilst we all enjoyed our meals sadly the slow service detracted from the overall experience.
We arrived at approx. 18:45 to what was a more or less full looking restaurant and ordered just after 19:00. Unfortunately from there it took just over an hour to serve our starter (2 X bowls of sharing nachos) after we queried the lengthy wait. The mains did at least follow in a reasonable time.
Someone (manager/senior?) did come and apologise to the table citing our arrival at the end of a busy dinner service as reason for our wait, although by the time we were served our food the restaurant was probably 50% occupancy. We were given complimentary desserts by way of apology too.
Observing generally food didn't seem to flow from the kitchen at a great pace, however to their credit they didn't let the pressure compromise on quality. I had the mixed grill, one of the best mixed grills I've had in some time. The steak (I upgraded to sirloin) was a little more cooked than I would have preferred but subjectivity allowed this was perfectly acceptable. It was also a very nice piece of meat, far better than I would normally have expected for a pub-grub mixed grill. The other members of our party all enjoyed their respective meals too.
Overall the meal was most enjoyable albeit slow service this particular night was the main detractor. Given the quality of the meal I would still be willing to visit again in the hope of a more...
Read moreWe went here for my birthday on Friday evening. I had been told I would receive a bottle of Prosecco for my birthday once we had ordered 2main meals. My partner is a vegetarian and offer puts several sides together to make up an acceptable main course. This is what he did on this occasion and because of that I was not allowed to have the bottle of Prosecco. Obviously I wasn't happy about that, the meal he had was a main course for him, served on one plate. I feel this definitely unfair. To add insult to injury they had run out of garlic prawns so I couldn't have the surf and turf I wanted and had to have a boring steak instead. Both meals were nice but it did spoil my birthday dinner. Since this review, at her request, I have spoken with Jessica who runs the Rose and Crown. She has very kindly offered to give me a bottle of Prosecco and a main course each! We are going to celebrate our 30th anniversary with this generous gift. Considering it is the brewery and not the pub that makes the rules on birthday ‘freebies’ I think Jessica had gone above and beyond on this...
