Went to Runswick Bay to enjoy fresh Cod and chips at the Royal Oak , a steep drive down to the Pay and Display car park , in this pretty little village. Scaffolding was erected at the front entrance , but got through the door, and entered into L shaped room were the bar was located and a burning enclosed log fire , a bit nippy inside so a small oil filled electric heating was running, this room was clean and light with wooden floors throughout , ( it's dog friendly) light pastel colours decorated the walls were the stone wasn't showing, 6 oblong shaped tables in this room that could seat up to 6 people at each table ,a long bar with 7 draft pumps of beer and lager other drinks on the wall at the back of the bar. My wife had the home made soup and crusty role with butter, a generous portion of leek and potato she found it tasty , my hope of fresh cod and chips and mushy peas was disappointing , the fish was cooked from the freezer ( I have had plenty of these at home so know the texture and taste as well as the look) the chips were ok ,skin left on and the mushy peas were also ok I did empty my plate , but when you are next to the sea you expect fresh fish. There is also another room to this pub with seating but was not being used, both gents and ladies are in a outside block which looked as old as the pub they were clean but tired , no hot water in the gents. The staff 1 serving drinks 1 serving food were friendly and helpful , this pub is sited on the Cleveland way walk so is a nice stop for refreshments , if I happen to venture here again I will be...
Read moreFantastic views of the sea,and we spent a lot of time looking at it in the 1 hour and 40 minutes it took for two toasted sandwiches, two plain sandwiches and two portions of chips to arrive (and with the 3 drinks we had it came to £38!!!) Was advised when I ordered that there was a delay. I went in a further two times to ask after our order and was told each time about the fact they had run out of chips, should be with us in 10/15 minutes. That was a blatant lie. Really annoyed,it ruined what was a lovely day, having been on the beach for a walk. Arrived and ordered at 1.50pm, left in semi darkness with 2 frozen children and a very cold disabled partner who couldn't go inside due to being hooked up to his oxygen. Couldn't even use the one ladies toilet for myself and my little boy because it was out of order. We should have been told the truth,we should have been offered a complimentary drink by way of an apology,we should have been seen by a manager and apologised to, instead it was left to two very young but very polite kitchen staff to humbly apologize when I asked them where our food might be as we noticed people getting their food when we know they had arrived...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreStaying in Runswick for the weekend. Been to the Royal loads of times over the years.
Friday night was great. Service very good and food great. Really enjoyed it, left us looking forward to another good night. Left a good tip, it was worth it. Sat night, service none existent (different staff) other than to conclude the best description would be it was rude. Only wanted a drink and desert but was refused with no explanation. Pretty poor. Seems to be run by younger staff with little training or a little knowledge of how to serve. So based on this weekend it could only be described as hit and miss. Based on Friday nights experience we will no doubt try again another time in the hope the owners make some basic...
